Thinking of switching from ChatGPT to Claude but worried about losing everything ChatGPT knows about you? You do not have to start from zero. Claude has a built-in memory import, and with a ChatGPT data export you can bring your important old chats, custom instructions and GPT setups across too.
This guide shows you how to move from ChatGPT to Claude step by step in November 2026: export your ChatGPT data, import your memory into Claude, rebuild custom instructions and custom GPTs as Claude Projects, pick the right plan and cancel ChatGPT safely.
It also covers what works differently, so the switch does not surprise you.
- Memory (2 minutes): in Claude open Settings > Memory > Start import, copy the prompt, paste it into ChatGPT, then paste ChatGPT’s answer back and click Add to memory. Allow up to 24 hours.
- Old chats: ChatGPT Settings > Data controls > Export data. Claude cannot turn the ZIP into Claude chats, but you can upload your key conversations into a Claude Project as reference files.
- Custom instructions: paste them into Claude’s personal preferences (Settings > General) and pick a Style.
- Custom GPTs: rebuild each one as a Project with instructions and knowledge files.
- Plans: Claude Free covers memory and up to 5 Projects; Pro is $20/month like ChatGPT Plus. Cancel ChatGPT only after Claude has everything.
What You Can and Cannot Move
| From ChatGPT | Can you move it? | How |
|---|---|---|
| Memory (facts about you) | Yes | Claude’s official Import memory tool |
| Custom instructions | Yes | Copy into Claude’s personal preferences |
| Custom GPTs you made | Yes, by rebuilding | Claude Projects (instructions + files) |
| ChatGPT Projects | Yes, by rebuilding | Claude Projects with the same files |
| Chat history | Partly | Export ZIP, upload chosen chats as files |
| Images made in ChatGPT | Download only | Save them from the export or the chats |
| Other people’s GPTs from the store | No | Look for a Claude Skill, connector or write your own Project |
The key point: Claude’s import moves what ChatGPT knows about you, not your full conversation list. Your old chats do not appear in Claude’s sidebar. That surprises many people, so plan for it.
Before You Start
- Create a Claude account at claude.ai (email or Google). New to Claude? Our how to use Claude AI guide covers the basics in 10 minutes.
- Keep ChatGPT active until you finish. You need it to generate the memory summary.
- Check ChatGPT memory is on: ChatGPT Settings > Personalization. If you just switched it on, give it a few hours to build memories.
- Use a computer if you can. Every step works on the web, and copying long text is easier.
Step 1: Export Your ChatGPT Data
Do this first, because the export can take a while to arrive.
- Open ChatGPT and click your profile picture > Settings.
- Go to Data controls > Export data and click Export, then confirm.
- Wait for the email. It often arrives within minutes, but OpenAI says it can take up to seven days. The download link expires after 24 hours, so download it promptly.
- Unzip the file. Inside you will find your conversations as
conversations.json(machine-readable) andchat.html(open it in a browser to read every chat), plus images and files you uploaded or created.
Keep this ZIP somewhere safe even if you never use it. It is your full backup.
Step 2: Import Your ChatGPT Memory Into Claude
Anthropic launched the Import memory tool on March 2, 2026, at the same time as making memory free for all Claude users. It works with ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and other assistants.
- In Claude, click your profile picture (bottom left) > Settings > Memory. On older layouts it sits under Settings > Capabilities.
- Turn on “Generate memory from chat history” if it is off.
- Next to “Import memory from other AI providers”, click Start import and copy the prompt Claude shows you.
- In ChatGPT, start a new chat. For a more thorough summary, switch from Auto to a Thinking model first.
- Paste Claude’s prompt and send it. ChatGPT writes a summary of everything it remembers about you: your job, projects, preferences, writing style and recurring topics.
- Read the summary before you copy it. Delete anything wrong, outdated or private you do not want Claude to keep (health details, passwords, other people’s information).
- Back in Claude, paste the summary into the import box and click Add to memory.
- Check the result later in Settings > Memory. Anthropic says processing can take up to 24 hours. You can edit or delete any memory there.
Anthropic calls memory import experimental, so Claude may not keep every detail. Spot-check by asking Claude “What do you know about me?” a day later.

Step 3: Move Custom Instructions
- Copy your ChatGPT custom instructions: ChatGPT Settings > Personalization > Custom instructions. Copy both “what should ChatGPT know about you” and “how should ChatGPT respond”.
- Paste them into Claude: Settings > General, in the personal preferences box (“What personal preferences should Claude consider in responses?”).
- Clean up ChatGPT-specific lines, such as “use browsing” or references to GPT models.
- Pick a Style: in the message box, choose Normal, Concise, Explanatory or Formal, or create your own Style from a writing sample. Styles control tone; preferences control content.
An example preferences block that works well:
I'm a marketing manager at a small SaaS company in the UK.
Use British spelling. Keep answers short, lead with the answer,
use bullet points for lists, and ask one question if my request is unclear.
When I share data, show a table first, then the insight.
Step 4: Rebuild Custom GPTs as Claude Projects
A Claude Project is the closest match to a custom GPT: a workspace with its own instructions, knowledge files, chats and memory. Free users can create up to 5 Projects; paid plans get more and switch big projects to RAG automatically to hold up to 10x more content.
- Open the GPT in ChatGPT’s editor (Explore GPTs > My GPTs > Edit) and copy its Instructions. Download its knowledge files if you no longer have them.
- In Claude, click Projects > New project and give it the same name.
- Paste the instructions into “Set project instructions”.
- Upload the knowledge files (PDF, DOCX, TXT, CSV, code; up to 30 MB per file).
- Test it with three prompts you used to give the GPT and adjust the instructions.
What does not carry over directly: GPT Actions (custom API calls). In Claude, use a connector (Google Drive, Gmail, Notion, GitHub and many more) or a Skill for repeat workflows. Our Claude Projects guide covers limits, memory and sharing in detail.
Step 5: Bring Important Old Chats
You will not need most of your old chats. Pick the 5 to 20 that still matter (long research threads, a book draft, a coding project) and move only those.
- Open
chat.htmlfrom your export in a browser and find the conversation. - Copy it into a text file (or print it to PDF) named clearly, such as
2026-09-website-redesign-chat.txt. - Upload it to the matching Claude Project as project knowledge, or attach it to a new chat.
- Ask Claude to pick up the thread:
This file is a past conversation I had with another assistant about my website redesign. Summarise the decisions we made, list open questions, and then let's continue from there.
For one large file of everything, keep conversations.json as a backup only. It is often hundreds of MB and full of noise, so uploading it whole wastes your usage.

ChatGPT vs Claude Plans
| Price | ChatGPT | Claude |
|---|---|---|
| $0 | Free | Free: Sonnet and Haiku, memory, web search, up to 5 Projects |
| About $8 | Go | No equivalent |
| $20/month | Plus | Pro ($17/month billed yearly): Opus, Claude Code, Research, Claude in Chrome |
| $100/month | Pro 100 | Max: 5x Pro usage, $100/month in API credits |
| $200/month | Pro 200 | Ultra: 10x Pro weekly usage, $200/month in API credits |
One big difference: Claude measures usage in 5-hour and weekly limits rather than message counts, and long chats with big files use more. Full details are in Claude Free vs Pro vs Max vs Ultra and ChatGPT plans compared.
Step 6: Cancel ChatGPT (Only When Ready)
Check this list first: memory imported and checked, custom instructions copied, GPTs rebuilt, important chats saved, export ZIP downloaded.
- Web subscription: ChatGPT Settings > Account (or Subscription) > Manage > Cancel plan. You keep access until the end of the billing period.
- Bought in the iPhone app: iPhone Settings > your name > Subscriptions > ChatGPT > Cancel.
- Bought on Android: Google Play > profile > Payments & subscriptions > Subscriptions > ChatGPT > Cancel.
- Optional clean-up: turn off “Improve the model for everyone” in Data controls, delete memories in Personalization, or delete chats you no longer want. Deleting your whole account is permanent; keep the export first.
Tips for Your First Week on Claude
- Use Projects for everything you return to. They keep context tidy and save usage.
- Start new chats often. Very long chats eat into your 5-hour limit faster.
- Turn on web search for anything current; without it Claude answers from training data.
- Ask for Artifacts when you want a document, table, chart or small app you can edit and download.
- Connect your tools (Google Drive, Gmail, Calendar, Notion) under Settings > Connectors so Claude can work with your files.
- Write prompts like a brief: goal, context, format and an example. Claude follows detailed instructions closely.
Troubleshooting
I cannot find “Import memory” in Claude
Check Settings > Memory, and on older layouts Settings > Capabilities. Make sure memory is switched on. Update the app or use claude.ai in a browser. Work accounts may have memory turned off by an admin.
ChatGPT gives a very short or empty summary
ChatGPT memory may be off or new. Turn it on in Personalization, wait a few hours, use a Thinking model and ask follow-up questions about your work, tools and preferences.
Claude does not seem to remember the import
Processing can take up to 24 hours. Then check Settings > Memory. Remember that memory inside a Project is separate from your general memory, so ask outside a Project or add key facts to the Project’s instructions.
The ChatGPT export email never arrived
Check spam, wait up to seven days, then request it again. If the link expired (24 hours), start a new export.
My old chats are not in Claude’s sidebar
That is expected. Claude does not import chat lists. Upload the conversations you need into a Project as files (Step 5).
Upload fails for a big chat file
Project files are limited to 30 MB each. Split long chats into smaller text files, or paste a ChatGPT-written summary instead of the full chat.
I hit Claude’s usage limit quickly
Long chats, big files and Opus use the most. Start fresh chats, use Projects instead of re-uploading files, choose Sonnet for everyday work and check Settings > Usage.
My Take
Switching is far easier than it was a year ago. The memory import takes two minutes and covers what really matters: who you are and how you like answers. Rebuilding your top GPTs as Projects is the part worth an hour, and you will usually end up with better instructions than before.
Do not try to move every old chat. Keep the export as a backup, bring across the few threads you still work on and let Claude build fresh memory from there.
FAQ
Can I transfer my ChatGPT chats to Claude?
Not as Claude chats. You can export them from ChatGPT (Settings > Data controls > Export data) and upload the ones you need to a Claude Project as files. Claude’s official import moves your memory, not your chat list.
How do I import ChatGPT memory into Claude?
In Claude go to Settings > Memory > Start import, paste the prompt into ChatGPT, then paste ChatGPT’s summary back into Claude and click Add to memory.
Is Claude’s memory import free?
Yes. Memory and memory import are available on the free plan as well as paid plans.
How long does the memory import take?
The copy and paste takes a couple of minutes. Anthropic says Claude can take up to 24 hours to process the imported memories.
What replaces custom GPTs in Claude?
Projects. Each one has its own instructions, knowledge files and memory. For repeat tasks and tool access, Skills and connectors fill the gap that GPT Actions used to.
Is Claude better than ChatGPT?
It depends on the task. Many people prefer Claude for writing, long documents and coding; ChatGPT has image generation built in and a cheaper Go plan. Try both free for a week.
Will I lose my ChatGPT data if I cancel?
No. Cancelling a subscription keeps your account and chats on the free plan. Only deleting your account removes them, so download the export first.
Can I import from Gemini or Copilot too?
Yes. The same Import memory prompt works with Gemini, Copilot and other assistants that have memory.
