ChatGPT Free vs Go vs Plus vs Pro (November 2026): Prices, Models, Limits and Which Plan to Pick

13โ€“20 minutes
Comparing ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus and Pro plans

ChatGPT now has more paid tiers than ever. On top of Free and the $20 Plus plan, there is the low-cost Go plan (which may show ads), and Pro has split into three tiers: Pro 100, Pro 200 and Pro 500. The models changed too: GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Luna now sit alongside the GPT-5.6 family. If you are not sure which plan you actually need, this guide walks through each one: prices, the models you get, real usage limits where they are known, how to upgrade, downgrade, cancel and get a refund, discounts, and fixes for the billing problems people hit most.

The model lists, context windows and features below come from OpenAI’s own ChatGPT pricing page, checked on November 5, 2026. OpenAI’s page shows prices in your local currency, so the US dollar prices are taken from independent pricing trackers updated in late September and early November 2026. Always confirm the price at checkout for your country.

TL;DR

  • Free ($0): unlimited text chats with GPT-6 Luna, limited uploads, images, voice and deep research.
  • Go (about $8/month): more of everything than Free and a 256K reasoning context, but no GPT-6.1 Sol or Astra, and it may include ads.
  • Plus ($20/month): the full GPT-6 lineup (Astra, 6.1 Sol, Sol, Luna), deep research, Codex, projects, custom GPTs and scheduled tasks.
  • Pro ($100, $200 or $500/month): much higher limits, 128K Instant and 400K reasoning context, GPT-5.6 Sol Pro, monthly API credits, and Ultrafast on Pro 500.
  • Business: about $20 per user per month billed yearly or $25 monthly, minimum two seats.
  • Cheapest way to pay: subscribe on the website, not in the app. Cancel any time; web refunds for accidental purchases within 14 days.

ChatGPT Plan Prices

Plan Price (US) Best for
Free $0 Casual questions and writing
Go About $8/month (local pricing varies) Regular users on a budget who do not need top models
Plus $20/month Most people who use ChatGPT every day
Pro 100 $100/month Heavy users and developers using Codex a lot
Pro 200 $200/month Power users who hit Pro 100 limits
Pro 500 $500/month Teams of one who need Ultrafast and the biggest allowance
Business $20/user/month yearly, $25 monthly (2-seat minimum) Small teams

OpenAI’s FAQ says paid plans are priced per user per month. Prices shown by app stores may be higher than on the web.

Which Models Each Plan Gets

This is the part that changed the most. Here is what OpenAI’s pricing page lists for each plan:

Model Free Go Plus Pro
GPT-6 Luna Yes Yes Yes Yes (expanded)
GPT-5 Thinking Mini Yes Yes Expanded Unlimited
GPT-6.1 Sol No No Yes Yes
GPT-6 Astra No No Yes Yes
GPT-6 Sol No No Yes Yes
GPT-5.6 Sol, Terra, Luna No Terra in Work and Codex on desktop only Yes Unlimited
GPT-5.6 Sol Pro No No No Yes
Legacy models No No Yes Yes

In plain terms: Free and Go both run mainly on GPT-6 Luna, the smallest GPT-6 model. Plus is the cheapest way to get GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol, which are the models people usually mean when they talk about “the best ChatGPT”. Pro adds GPT-5.6 Sol Pro and makes the GPT-5.6 family unlimited.

Context Window by Plan

The context window decides how much text ChatGPT can keep in mind at once, such as a long document or a long conversation. It varies a lot by plan:

Plan GPT Instant context Reasoning (Thinking) context
Free 27K tokens (about 12 pages) Varies
Go 54K tokens (about 40 pages) 256K tokens (about 320 pages)
Plus 54K tokens (about 40 pages) 256K tokens (about 320 pages)
Pro 128K tokens (about 250 pages) 400K tokens (about 680 pages)

If you regularly paste whole books, codebases or long contracts, Pro’s 400K reasoning context is the big upgrade. Compare that with Claude, which offers up to 1M tokens on every plan including free, depending on the model (see Claude plans compared).

Features and Limits Compared

This table follows the comparison grid on OpenAI’s pricing page (checked November 5, 2026). A few things surprise people: Projects are now on the free plan, scheduled tasks start at Go, and Sites and developer mode need Plus.

Feature Free Go Plus Pro

*OpenAI’s footnote says usage must be reasonable and follow its policies, so “unlimited” still has abuse guardrails. OpenAI does not publish exact message counts for most features and limits can change with demand. The pricing page only mentions ads for Go, so check OpenAI’s ads help article if ads matter to you on Free. If you want image generation in particular, OpenAI’s newest image models are GPT-Image-2.6 Flare and Sunburst, which I cover in the ChatGPT Images 2.6 guide. Developers who want to use them directly can check the image rates in my OpenAI API pricing guide.

Known Usage Limits (Numbers)

Because OpenAI mostly says “limited” and “expanded”, people search for actual numbers. These are the figures that have been published or widely reported as of early November 2026. Treat the reported ones as a guide, not a promise.

Limit Go Plus Pro Status
Active scheduled tasks 3 5 15 Reported (Business and Edu get 10)
GPT-Live voice Not stated Up to 3 hours Pro 100: up to 15 hours. Pro 200: unlimited Reported
Files per project or chat Not stated Not stated Up to 40 files Reported
GPT Instant context 54K 54K 128K Official
Reasoning context 256K 256K 400K Official
Codex usage vs Plus Limited 1x (baseline) Pro 100 about 5x, Pro 200 about 10x, Pro 500 about 25x Reported multiples, no base figure published

When you hit a limit, ChatGPT tells you which model or tool is capped and when it resets, and usually lets you carry on with a smaller model. If you hit the same wall every day, that is the clearest sign to move up a tier.

Pro 100 vs Pro 200 vs Pro 500

OpenAI’s pricing page describes Pro as having three usage tiers, with longer Codex and ChatGPT Work sessions and monthly API credits on each. Independent coverage from Tech Insider (November 2, 2026) adds these details, some of which OpenAI has not officially confirmed:

  • Pro 100: GPT-6 Pro access, up to 15 hours of GPT-Live voice, and 15 active scheduled tasks. A doubled Work and Codex allowance has been reported, possibly as a temporary promotion.
  • Pro 200: the same models with unlimited GPT-Live voice and a larger allowance. After the weekly GPT-6 Pro cap it reportedly falls back to GPT-5.6 Thinking at medium effort. Reports of a cut to its usage multiple were later said to be cancelled, and OpenAI has not published the numbers.
  • Pro 500: the only tier with Ultrafast for GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol, the fastest responses OpenAI sells.

My advice is to start at Pro 100 and only step up if you hit its limits in real work. Most people who think they need Pro are well served by Plus.

Yearly Cost and Cost per Day

Monthly prices look small until you add them up. Here is what each plan costs over a year in US dollars, before tax. Only Business and Enterprise offer annual billing, so personal plans are always paid month by month.

Plan Per month Per year Per day
Go About $8 About $96 About $0.26
Plus $20 $240 About $0.66
Pro 100 $100 $1,200 About $3.29
Pro 200 $200 $2,400 About $6.58
Pro 500 $500 $6,000 About $16.44
Business (2 seats, yearly) $40 $480 About $1.32

A quick way to decide: if Pro 100 saves you more than about 2 hours of work a month at a $50 hourly rate, it pays for itself. If it doesn’t, Plus is the better buy. Remember that Pro’s monthly API credits expire at the end of each billing cycle, so they only add value if you actually build with the API.

ChatGPT Business and Enterprise

For teams, OpenAI’s business page lists a Standard seat at $20 per month billed yearly or $25 monthly, and a Premium seat at $100 per month yearly or $125 monthly with 5x the usage of Standard and no 5-hour limit. Business starts at two users. Enterprise is custom priced, with credit-based and token-based pricing available. Team plans add shared workspaces and admin controls, so check OpenAI’s business terms for data handling if you work with client information.

Which ChatGPT Plan Should You Choose?

If you… Choose
Ask a few questions a day and want free Free
Use ChatGPT daily but mostly for quick tasks, and are on a tight budget Go
Want the best GPT-6 models, deep research, projects and Codex Plus
Code with Codex for hours, run long ChatGPT Work sessions, or need 400K context Pro 100
Need the fastest possible answers for paid work Pro 500
Work in a team that shares projects and needs admin controls Business

Before you pay, it is worth knowing the alternatives at the same price. Claude Pro and Google AI Pro both cost about $20 a month, and SuperGrok costs $30. I compare all four in ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini vs Grok. If you live in Chrome, my ChatGPT Chrome extension guide shows how to use ChatGPT on any web page.

ChatGPT Plus vs Claude Pro vs Google AI Pro vs SuperGrok

At around $20 a month you have four serious choices. Here is the short version. My full breakdown, with model benchmarks, is in ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini vs Grok.

Plan Price Best at Watch out for
ChatGPT Plus $20 All-round use, images, voice, Codex, the biggest tool and plugin ecosystem 54K Instant context is small for long documents
Claude Pro $20 Writing, coding, long documents (large context) Usage resets in 5-hour windows, heavy users hit them
Google AI Pro $19.99 Gmail, Docs, Drive and Android integration, includes extra Google storage Best value only if you live in Google apps
SuperGrok $30 Live X (Twitter) data and fewer content restrictions Most expensive of the four

How to Upgrade, Downgrade or Cancel

Where you change your plan depends on where you bought it. A plan bought on the web is managed on the web, and a plan bought through the iPhone or Android app is managed in that app store. This trips up a lot of people.

Upgrade on the web (cheapest route)

  1. Go to chatgpt.com and sign in.
  2. Click your profile picture, then Upgrade plan.
  3. Pick Go, Plus or Pro (and the Pro tier), then enter a card. All major credit cards work.
  4. Check the confirmation screen for the exact charge, including tax and any proration, before you confirm.

App store prices can be higher than web prices, so if you are on a phone, upgrading in a browser usually saves money.

Downgrade or cancel on the web

  1. Click your profile picture, then Settings.
  2. Open Account (shown as Subscription or Plan on some versions) and choose Manage.
  3. Choose Cancel subscription, or pick a different plan to switch.

After cancelling you keep your paid features until the end of the billing period, then the account drops to Free. Your chats stay. Before you downgrade, export anything you rely on and pause extra scheduled tasks, because Plus allows fewer active tasks than Pro (5 vs 15) and Go fewer still (3).

Cancel an iPhone or iPad subscription

  1. Open Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions.
  2. Tap ChatGPT, then Cancel Subscription.

Cancel an Android (Google Play) subscription

  1. Open the Google Play Store, tap your profile picture, then Payments and subscriptions and Subscriptions.
  2. Tap ChatGPT, then Cancel subscription.

Deleting the app does not cancel the subscription. You have to cancel it in the store or on the web.

Refunds: Who Can Get One

OpenAI’s help center sets out these rules:

  • Bought on the web: sign in to the account that was charged, open the help center chat widget (bottom right) and ask for a refund. It shows whether you are eligible before an agent joins. Accidental purchases are generally eligible if you ask within 14 days of the charge. Approved refunds take 5 to 7 business days.
  • Bought on Google Play: same chat-widget process. Approved refunds take up to 10 business days.
  • Bought on the Apple App Store: OpenAI cannot refund these. Request the refund from Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com.
  • EU, UK and Turkey: you may get a prorated refund if you cancel within 14 days of purchase.

Discounts: Teachers, Students and Nonprofits

  • Teachers: ChatGPT for Teachers is free for verified US K-12 educators through June 2027.
  • Universities: ChatGPT Edu is sold to institutions, so ask your university IT team if you already have access.
  • Students: there is no permanent student discount on the pricing page. OpenAI has run limited-time student promotions before, and other AI companies run them too. I track current ones in best AI tools for students.
  • Nonprofits: up to 75% off ChatGPT Business or Enterprise.

Privacy and Model Training by Plan

On Free, Go, Plus and Pro, OpenAI may use your chats to train its models unless you opt out. You can turn this off in Settings > Data controls > Improve the model for everyone. Temporary Chats are not used for training either. On Business and Enterprise, OpenAI says it does not train on your workspace data by default, which is the main reason companies pay for those plans. If you handle client data, use a Business workspace rather than a personal Plus account.

Billing and Plan Problems (Fixes)

“Your card was declined”

Check that your bank allows international online payments, since the charge comes from OpenAI in the US. Turn off any VPN, make sure the billing country matches the card, and try another card or the app store route if it keeps failing.

I paid but still see the Free plan

Sign out and back in, then refresh. Check you are signed in to the same account you paid with (Google, Apple and email sign-ins create separate accounts). If you paid in the app, open the app once so the store can confirm the purchase.

I can’t find the cancel button

You probably subscribed through Apple or Google Play. Cancel in the store as shown above.

I hit a usage limit on Plus

Switch to a smaller model from the model picker until the reset time shown in the message, move long chats into a Project so the context is reused, or try the work during off-peak hours. If it happens every day, Pro 100 is the next step.

I was charged twice

This usually means two accounts, or one web subscription plus one app store subscription. Check both, cancel the one you don’t need, and ask for a refund on the duplicate through the right channel.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much is ChatGPT Plus in 2026?

$20 a month in the US. Local prices differ by country and app store.

What is ChatGPT Go?

A low-cost plan (about $8 a month in the US) with more messages, uploads, images, voice and memory than Free, and a 256K reasoning context. It does not include GPT-6.1 Sol or GPT-6 Astra, and OpenAI says it may include ads.

Is ChatGPT Pro worth it?

Only if you hit Plus limits regularly, need 400K reasoning context, use Codex or ChatGPT Work for hours a day, or want GPT-5.6 Sol Pro. For most people Plus is enough.

Does ChatGPT Plus include API access?

No. The API is billed separately. Pro plans include monthly API credits.

Which model does the free ChatGPT use?

GPT-6 Luna and GPT-5 Thinking Mini.

Can I cancel ChatGPT Plus any time?

Yes. Monthly plans can be cancelled from your account settings (or your app store) and stay active until the end of the billing period.

Is there a yearly ChatGPT Plus plan?

No. OpenAI only offers annual billing on Business and Enterprise. Go, Plus and Pro are monthly.

Does ChatGPT Go have ads?

OpenAI says Go “may include ads”. Plus and Pro do not.

What is the difference between Pro 100, Pro 200 and Pro 500?

The same Pro features at different usage levels, roughly 5x, 10x and 25x the Plus allowance by price, with more voice time and API credits as you go up. Only Pro 500 includes Ultrafast responses.

Do I lose my chats if I downgrade to Free?

No. Chat history is unlimited on every plan. You lose access to paid models and some features, and extra scheduled tasks need to be paused.

Is ChatGPT cheaper on the website or in the app?

Usually the website. OpenAI notes that app store prices can be higher.

Can two people share one ChatGPT Plus account?

Plus is for one person, and sharing makes your memory, history and limits a mess. For two or more people, ChatGPT Business starts at two seats.

Final Thoughts

For most people the choice is simple: stay on Free if you are a light user, pay $20 for Plus if you want GPT-6 Astra and the full toolset, and only consider Pro once Plus limits actually slow you down. Go is a good middle ground in regions where it is cheap, as long as you accept that it runs on the smaller Luna model and may show ads.

If you build apps rather than chat, skip subscriptions entirely and look at the OpenAI API pricing or my AI API pricing comparison across every major provider.
