Claude is Anthropic’s AI assistant, and in 2026 it does far more than chat: it reads your files, searches the web, builds documents and small apps, remembers your preferences and can even write code on your computer.
This beginner’s guide shows you how to use Claude AI step by step, from creating an account to Projects, Artifacts, Research and the best prompts, with every plan limit checked against Anthropic’s pricing page in November 2026.
- Start free: sign up at claude.ai with email or Google. You get Sonnet and Haiku, web search, memory, file uploads and up to 5 Projects.
- Pro ($20/month) adds Opus models, Claude Code, Research mode and Claude in Chrome.
- Attach files with the + button, turn on web search for current info, and use Projects for anything you come back to.
- Artifacts let Claude build documents, charts, slides and mini apps in a side panel.
- Usage is measured in 5-hour and weekly limits, not message counts. Check Settings > Usage.
What Claude Can Do
- Write and edit: emails, essays, reports, social posts, cover letters.
- Read your files: summarise PDFs, compare contracts, pull data out of spreadsheets.
- Answer current questions: with web search, it cites the pages it used.
- Make things: documents, slides, charts and small interactive apps in Artifacts.
- Analyse data: it can run code to crunch a CSV and draw a chart.
- Code: explain, fix and write code in chat, or work directly on your files with Claude Code.
Comparing assistants before you commit? My ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini vs Grok comparison covers models, prices and features side by side.
Step 1: Create a Claude Account
- Go to claude.ai in any browser.
- Sign up with Google, Apple or your email address. With email, Claude sends a login link instead of a password.
- Verify your phone number if asked. This is a one-time anti-abuse check.
- Tell Claude your name and accept the terms.
- You are on the Free plan. You can upgrade later in Settings > Billing.
Note: you must be 18 or older to use Claude.ai, and it is available only in supported countries.
Step 2: Pick Where to Use It (Web, Desktop, Phone)
| App | Get it | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Web | claude.ai | Any computer, no install |
| Desktop (Windows, Mac) | claude.com/download | Quick-launch shortcut, desktop extensions, Claude Code sessions |
| iPhone and iPad | App Store, “Claude by Anthropic” | Voice mode, photos, on-the-go questions |
| Android | Google Play, “Claude by Anthropic” | Voice mode, photos, on-the-go questions |
Your chats sync across all of them, so you can start on your phone and finish on your laptop.
Step 3: Your First Chat and Choosing a Model
- Click New chat and type your request in the box at the bottom.
- Press Enter to send. Shift+Enter adds a new line.
- Pick a model from the menu near the message box. Free users get Sonnet and Haiku; Pro and up add Opus.
- Follow up. Ask Claude to shorten, change tone, add detail or try again. It remembers everything earlier in the chat.
- Edit or retry. Hover over your message to edit it, or use the retry button on Claude’s reply for a fresh answer.
| Model family | Use it for | Plans |
|---|---|---|
| Haiku | Quick, simple answers; uses the least of your limit | All |
| Sonnet | Everyday writing, analysis and coding | All |
| Opus | Harder reasoning, long documents, serious coding | Pro, Max, Ultra |
| Fable | Anthropic’s most capable model for the hardest jobs | Max and Ultra (Pro via usage credits) |
Tip: turn on extended thinking (in the model or tools menu) for maths, planning and tricky logic. Claude thinks step by step before answering, which uses more of your limit but gives better results.
Step 4: Upload Files, Images and PDFs
- Click the + button in the message box, or drag files straight into the chat.
- Add what you need: PDFs, Word files, spreadsheets, CSVs, code, screenshots and photos all work.
- Say what you want, for example “Summarise this contract in 10 bullet points and flag anything unusual about termination”.
- Ask follow-ups about the same file without uploading it again.
Claude can also create files. Ask for “an Excel sheet with a budget for my trip” or “a Word document version of this”, and it produces a downloadable file.
Note: big files use more of your limit every time they are part of the conversation. Start a new chat when you move to a new topic.
Step 5: Web Search and Research Mode
- Web search (all plans): turn it on in the tools menu. Claude searches when your question needs fresh facts, and shows the sources it used.
- Research (Pro and up): for big questions, Research runs many searches, reads the results and writes a cited report. It takes several minutes and uses more of your limit.
Good Research prompts are specific: “Compare the three cheapest 4K monitors under $400 sold in the UK this month, with prices, panel type and reviews” works much better than “best monitor”.
Step 6: Organise Work With Projects
A Project is a workspace with its own files and instructions that every chat inside it can use. Free accounts get up to 5 Projects; paid plans get unlimited.
- Click Projects in the sidebar, then Create project.
- Name it, for example “Wedding planning” or “Blog posts”.
- Add knowledge: upload reference files such as a style guide, product sheet or notes.
- Set instructions: for example “Write in British English, friendly tone, short paragraphs”.
- Start chats inside the Project. Every new chat already knows the files and instructions.
My full Claude Projects guide covers knowledge limits, sharing and memory inside Projects.
Step 7: Make Documents and Apps With Artifacts
When you ask for something substantial, such as a report, a chart, a slide deck or a small app, Claude opens it as an Artifact in a panel beside the chat.
- Try: “Make an interactive flashcard app for Spanish verbs” or “Turn this data into a bar chart”.
- Edit by chatting: “Make the buttons bigger” or “Add a dark mode” updates the Artifact.
- Copy, download or share: use the buttons in the Artifact panel. Shared Artifacts open for anyone with the link.
Tip: start with a clear brief: who it is for, what it should do, and the look you want. Then improve it in small steps rather than asking for everything at once.
Step 8: Memory, Styles and Personal Preferences
- Memory: Claude can remember useful details across chats, such as your job or preferences. Manage it in Settings, where you can view, edit or turn it off.
- Personal preferences: in Settings > Profile, describe how you like answers (“I’m a teacher, keep explanations simple, use examples”).
- Styles: choose a writing style like Concise, Explanatory or Formal from the message box, or create your own from a writing sample.
- Incognito chat: for one-off private questions, start an incognito chat, which is not saved to your history or memory.
Step 9: Connectors, Skills and Chrome
| Feature | What it does | Plans |
|---|---|---|
| Connectors | Let Claude read and act in apps like Google Drive, Gmail, Calendar, Notion and Slack | All |
| Skills | Reusable instruction packs (SKILL.md) that teach Claude a task your way | All |
| Claude in Chrome | A browser extension that lets Claude read and click through web pages for you | Pro and up |
| Claude Code | Claude works on code in your terminal, desktop app or the web | Pro and up |
Add connectors in Settings > Connectors. To build your own Skills, see my Claude Skills guide. Coders should read how to install Claude Code, and if you want Claude to remember your project between coding sessions, see how to install claude-mem.
How to Write Good Prompts for Claude
- Give context. Who you are, who the output is for and why. “I run a small bakery and need…” beats “Write a post”.
- Be specific about the output. Length, format (table, bullet list, email), tone and language.
- Show an example. Paste a sample of the style you like.
- Ask for options. “Give me 5 subject lines” lets you pick the best.
- Iterate. Treat the first answer as a draft and tell Claude exactly what to change.
10 beginner prompts to try
- “Explain how mortgages work like I’m 15, then give me 5 questions to ask my bank.”
- “Here is my CV [attach]. Rewrite it for a junior data analyst role and list what’s missing.”
- “Plan a 3-day trip to Lisbon for two on a mid-range budget, as a day-by-day table.”
- “Turn these meeting notes into an email with action items and owners.”
- “Read this PDF and give me the 7 most important points with page numbers.”
- “Make a weekly meal plan for a vegetarian family of four with a shopping list.”
- “Check this message for tone. Make it polite but firm.”
- “Build a simple tip calculator app I can use on my phone.”
- “Analyse this CSV of sales and chart the top 10 products by revenue.”
- “Quiz me on this chapter with 10 multiple choice questions, one at a time.”
Free vs Pro vs Max vs Ultra
| Plan | Price (US) | Main extras |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Sonnet and Haiku, web search, memory, files, Artifacts, up to 5 Projects |
| Pro | $20/month ($17/month yearly) | Opus, Claude Code, Research, Claude in Chrome, unlimited Projects |
| Max | $100/month | 5x Pro usage, Fable included, priority access, $100/month API credits |
| Ultra | $200/month | 10x Pro weekly usage, no 5-hour limit for verified accounts, $200/month API credits |
Prices in the mobile apps can differ because of app store fees. The full breakdown, including Team and Enterprise, is in Claude Free vs Pro vs Max vs Ultra.
Making Your Usage Last Longer
- Use Haiku or Sonnet for simple jobs and save Opus for hard ones.
- Start new chats for new topics; long chats reread everything each time.
- Put big reference files in a Project instead of uploading them in many chats.
- Turn off tools you do not need, such as Research or extended thinking, for quick questions.
- Check Settings > Usage to see your 5-hour session and weekly bars.
Note: Claude chat and Claude Code share the same limits. A long coding session leaves less for chat, and the other way round.
Troubleshooting
“You’ve reached your usage limit”
Wait for the reset time shown, switch to a lighter model, or turn on usage credits on a paid plan. More fixes are in my guide to Claude errors and limit messages.
“Claude is overloaded” or “Something went wrong”
Anthropic’s servers are busy. Wait a minute and retry, check status.anthropic.com, or try a different model.
My file will not upload
The file may be too large or password protected. Split big PDFs, remove the password, or export spreadsheets as CSV.
Claude gives out-of-date information
Turn on web search and ask again. Without it, Claude only knows what it learned during training.
I cannot log in
Email logins use a magic link, so check your spam folder. If you signed up with Google or Apple, use the same button again.
My Take
The free plan is genuinely useful for writing, files and web questions. Set up one Project for the work you repeat most and write personal preferences once; that alone makes Claude feel twice as smart.
Upgrade to Pro when you want Opus for hard problems, Research reports or Claude Code. Most people never need Max or Ultra unless they code all day.
