Gemini Live is Google’s real-time voice mode. You talk, Gemini talks back, and you can interrupt it like a normal conversation. You can also point your camera at something or share your screen and ask about what it sees.
In the last few months it got much more capable. It runs on the new Gemini 3.8 Live Extended Thinking model and handles 97 languages. It can now manage your Gmail by voice and set up long-running tasks. Here’s how to use all of it.
- Start it: open the Gemini app and tap the Live button (three lines next to the mic). On Android you can also hold the power button.
- Camera and screen sharing work on phones that support Gemini. Tap the camera or screen-share icon in Live.
- New model (Sept 2026): Gemini 3.8 Live Extended Thinking, ranked #1 on Artificial Analysis’ Speech to Speech Quality Index (82.6). It switches between 97 languages mid-chat.
- Productivity (Aug 2026): search, summarise and archive Gmail by voice, create Calendar events, Daily Brief (Google AI Plus+) and Spark tasks (Google AI Pro+).
- Plans: core Live is in the free app. Plus is $4.99, Pro $19.99 and Ultra from $99.99 a month.
What Gemini Live Is
Normal Gemini chat is turn-based: you type or speak, then wait for a reply. Gemini Live is a continuous voice conversation. It feels closer to a phone call.
- Interrupt anytime: just start talking and it stops to listen.
- See what you see: share your camera or screen for context.
- Do things: it can use Google apps in the background while it keeps talking.
- Works in the background: you can leave the app or lock the screen and keep talking.
On Android, Gemini has replaced Google Assistant on most phones. I explain what changed in Gemini replacing Google Assistant.
How to Start Gemini Live
On Android
- Install or update the Gemini app from the Play Store, and set Gemini as your assistant if asked.
- Open Live: press and hold the power button (or say “Hey Google”), then tap the Live button with three lines next to the mic.
- Start talking. Tap the X or say “stop” to end. Your conversation is saved as a chat.
On iPhone
- Install the Gemini app from the App Store and sign in with your Google account.
- Tap the Live button at the bottom right of the chat screen.
- Allow the microphone (and camera if you want to use it).
Tip: Pick a voice you like. In the Gemini app, go to Settings > Gemini’s voice and preview the options.
Use Your Camera With Gemini Live
Google says camera sharing works on all phones that support Gemini. As you move the camera, Gemini updates its answers.
- Start Gemini Live.
- Tap the camera icon at the bottom of the screen.
- Point and ask. “What plant is this and does it need more light?”
- Keep going. Move the camera and ask follow-ups.
Things that work well, from Google’s own tips and my use:
- Landmarks and shops: ask about a building or storefront you’re walking past.
- Food: point at a dish and ask what’s in it, or what to cook with what’s in your fridge.
- Fix things: show it a device and ask how to reset or assemble it.
- Homework and maths: point at a problem and ask it to explain step by step, not just answer.
Note: For a one-off search of something on screen, Circle to Search is faster. Live is better when you want a back-and-forth.
Share Your Screen
- Open the app or page you want help with.
- Hold the power button and tap Share screen with Live, or tap the screen-share icon inside Live.
- Ask about it. “Which of these TVs is best for a bright room?”
- Stop sharing from the notification or by ending Live.
Google’s examples include comparing products while shopping, scaling a recipe from a video, and summarising safety tips from a tutorial. You can also add a PDF manual and get step-by-step assembly help.
Warning: Gemini sees everything on your screen while sharing, including notifications. Stop sharing before you open banking apps, passwords or private messages.
Gemini 3.8 Live and Extended Thinking
Google launched two new voice models on 15 September 2026:
| Model | Built for | Where you get it |
|---|---|---|
| Gemini 3.8 Live | Speed and cost; fluid dialogue and visual grounding | Search Live, Gemini API, AI Studio |
| Gemini 3.8 Live Extended Thinking | Harder, multi-step tasks with more reasoning | Gemini Live; Gmail and Keep for Google AI subscribers; Docs on Pro and Ultra; API |
What it changes for you:
- 97 languages: it detects and switches language mid-conversation.
- Thinks while talking: it says things like “let me check that” and gives progress updates instead of going silent.
- Background tools: it runs searches and app actions while still talking to you.
- Benchmarks (Google’s figures): #1 on Artificial Analysis’ Speech to Speech Quality Index (82.6), 97.7% on Big Bench Audio, 68.6% on τ-Voice.
Note: All audio from these models carries Google’s SynthID watermark, so it can be identified as AI-generated.
Gmail, Calendar, Daily Brief and Spark by Voice
In August 2026, Google turned Gemini Live into a hands-free assistant for your apps. It works out which tool to use from what you say.
| Feature | Example | Plan |
|---|---|---|
| Gmail by voice | “Find the email from the plumber and archive the newsletters” | Not stated by Google |
| Calendar events | “Add the school play from that email, with driving time” | Not stated |
| Daily Brief | “What’s my day look like?” (Gmail + Calendar summary) | Google AI Plus or higher |
| Spark | “Keep a weekly meal plan and grocery list from my recipe doc” | Google AI Pro or higher |
| Personal Intelligence | “What was that restaurant we went to in June?” | Needs connected apps |
- Connect your apps. In Gemini, open Settings and turn on Personal Intelligence and the apps you want (Gmail, Calendar, Photos, YouTube).
- Tap Live and ask in plain language.
- Confirm actions. Check what it did before you rely on it, especially for deletes.
Spark runs multi-step jobs across Docs, Sheets, Drive and the web, even over days or weeks when the app is closed. For typed Gmail help, see my Gemini in Gmail guide.
What’s Free and What Needs a Plan
| Plan (US price) | Gemini Live extras |
|---|---|
| Free | Voice conversations, camera and screen sharing |
| Google AI Plus ($4.99/month) | Daily Brief; Extended Thinking in Gmail and Keep |
| Google AI Pro ($19.99/month) | Spark; Extended Thinking in Docs; higher limits |
| Google AI Ultra (from $99.99/month) | Everything in Pro with the highest limits |
Google rolls features out gradually and by country, so you may see some later than others. Compare plans in my Google AI Pro vs Ultra guide.
Best Ways to Use Gemini Live
- Practise a language: “Talk to me in Spanish at a beginner level and correct my mistakes.”
- Rehearse an interview: “Act as a hiring manager for a junior developer role and ask me five questions.”
- Brainstorm while walking: talk through an idea, then ask it to turn the chat into a Docs outline.
- Cook hands-free: share your screen on a recipe video and ask it to scale the ingredients.
- Learn a topic: “Explain how GPUs run AI models like I’m 15, then quiz me.”
Tip: Ask it to “keep answers short” at the start. Live tends to be chatty, and short replies make the conversation feel faster.
Privacy and Settings
- Chats are saved to your Gemini history like typed chats. You can delete them from the chat list.
- Activity setting: in Gemini’s settings you can turn off saving activity and set auto-delete. Google may still keep chats briefly to run the service.
- Camera and screen: Gemini only sees them while you’re sharing. You’ll see an on-screen indicator.
- Connected apps: you can disconnect Gmail, Photos and others in Personal Intelligence settings at any time.
Warning: Don’t share sensitive documents, IDs or financial details by camera or screen. Treat it like talking to a person who might remember.

Troubleshooting
I don’t see the Live button
- Update the Gemini app and the Google app (on Android).
- Check your account: work or school accounts may have Live turned off by an admin. Try a personal account.
- Check age and region: Gemini Live isn’t available everywhere or for every account type.
The camera or screen-share icon is missing
Update the app and check that Gemini has camera and screen-capture permission in your phone settings. Some older or low-memory phones get features later.
Live keeps stopping or cutting me off
- Background noise can make it think you’re interrupting. Use headphones with a mic.
- Battery saver can kill it in the background. Exclude the Gemini app from battery optimisation.
It can’t find my emails
Turn on Gmail under connected apps in Gemini’s Personal Intelligence settings. The voice productivity features are still rolling out, so they may not be on your account yet.
