Gemini Replaces Google Assistant on Android: What Changes and How to Set Up Gemini (2026)

If “Hey Google” suddenly sounds different on your phone, you are not imagining it. Google started retiring Google Assistant on Android phones on September 4, 2026, and replacing it with Gemini. The switch is automatic, it spreads to your watch, earbuds and Android Auto, and once it happens you cannot go back. Many people got an email about it in August and still have questions: what stops working, what gets better, and which settings to change so Gemini behaves like the assistant you are used to. This guide answers all of that.

TL;DR

  • Google began removing Assistant from compatible Android phones on September 4, 2026, rolling out over several weeks.
  • When Gemini becomes the default, connected Wear OS watches, tablets, supported earbuds and Android Auto switch too.
  • No way back: after the update, Assistant cannot be restored. Devices that do not meet Gemini’s requirements keep Assistant for now.
  • You still use “Hey Google” or press and hold the power button. Alarms, timers, music and smart-home control work in Gemini.
  • Spend five minutes in Gemini settings: enable lock-screen use, connect apps (Google Home, Spotify, Keep, Calendar) and check Gemini Apps Activity.

Timeline: How We Got Here

Date What happened
February 2023 Google previews its LLM chatbot as Bard
February 2024 Bard is renamed Gemini and arrives as an optional Android assistant
March 2025 Google announces Gemini will replace Assistant on most mobile devices
Late 2025 Google delays the full switch into 2026; the original March 2026 target is pushed back
August 2026 Users receive emails saying Assistant will be removed from their devices
September 4, 2026 Phase-out begins on compatible Android phones, rolling out over several weeks

Google’s reasoning is simple: running two assistants is expensive and confusing, and Gemini can handle complex questions, keep context across a conversation and work across apps in a way the old Assistant could not.

Which Devices Are Affected

  • Android phones that meet Gemini’s minimum requirements. On most current phones Gemini was already the default for new users.
  • Tablets linked to the same account.
  • Wear OS smartwatches, including Galaxy Watch and Pixel Watch, switch automatically when the phone does.
  • Earbuds and headphones with built-in Google voice support, including Galaxy Buds paired to a Galaxy phone.
  • Android Auto, which relies only on Gemini for voice commands once your phone switches.

Phones that cannot run Gemini (very old or low-memory devices) keep Assistant for the time being. Google Home and Nest speakers are a separate story: they are moving to Gemini for Home on their own schedule.

Minimum requirements for Gemini on Android

Requirement Minimum
Android version Android 10 or newer
RAM 2 GB or more
Apps Current Google app and Gemini app from the Play Store
Account A personal Google account (work and school accounts depend on the admin; supervised child accounts use Gemini through Family Link)

Phones below these specs are the only Android devices that keep the classic Assistant. To check yours, open Settings > About phone for the Android version and RAM.

What about iPhone?

iPhone never had Assistant at the system level, so nothing is switched for you. Install the Gemini app from the App Store, sign in, and add its widget or a Siri shortcut (“Hey Siri, Gemini”) if you want quick voice access.

Before the Switch: A 5-Minute Checklist

  1. Screenshot your Assistant routines (Assistant settings > Routines). Gemini does not copy them over one to one, so you will want the list.
  2. Check your reminders in Google Tasks. Assistant reminders were already moved to Tasks, and that is where Gemini creates new ones.
  3. Make sure your smart-home devices show up in the Google Home app on the same account. Gemini controls only what Home can see.
  4. Note your default music and messaging apps so you can connect them in Gemini straight away.
  5. Update Android Auto and your watch app, so the car and watch switch cleanly at the same time as the phone.

What Changes and What Still Works

The core everyday commands still work in Gemini: setting alarms and timers, answering questions, playing music, sending messages, making calls, navigation and controlling compatible smart-home devices. The way you call it is the same: say “Hey Google” or press and hold the power button (side button on Galaxy phones, if set to the assistant).

What you lose is mostly the old Assistant’s predictability. Gemini answers in longer, conversational replies and can be a little slower for one-word tasks. Some legacy features, like certain Assistant routines and very old third-party Actions, have no direct equivalent. Users who liked Assistant for simple, fast commands have been the most vocal critics.

How to Set Up Gemini Properly (Step by Step)

  1. Update the Gemini and Google apps from the Play Store so you have the latest features.
  2. Open the Gemini app and sign in with the Google account you use for Calendar, Gmail and Home.
  3. Tap your profile picture > Settings.
  4. Under Google Assistant features on this phone or Digital assistants from Google, confirm Gemini is selected (on switched phones it is the only option).
  5. Open “Hey Google” & Voice Match and retrain your voice model if Gemini is not responding reliably.
  6. Go to Apps (formerly Extensions) and connect the services you use: Google Home, Calendar, Keep, Tasks, Gmail, YouTube Music, Spotify, WhatsApp, Utilities.
  7. On your watch, open the Gemini tile or long-press the side button once to finish its setup.

7 Gemini Settings to Change Right Away

  1. Use Gemini on the lock screen: Settings > Gemini on lock screen. Turn on to set timers or ask questions without unlocking; leave personal results off if others use your phone.
  2. Connect Google Home: required for lights, thermostats and plugs. Without it, smart-home commands fail.
  3. Default music provider: in Apps, connect Spotify or YouTube Music so “play” commands go to the right app.
  4. Gemini Apps Activity: choose whether chats are saved and for how long (3, 18 or 36 months).
  5. Personal context: decide whether Gemini can use past chats and connected apps to personalise answers.
  6. Responses on lock screen with sensitive info: off is safer.
  7. Gemini Live voice: pick a voice you like for spoken conversations.

What Gemini Does Better Than Assistant

  • Follow-up questions: “What’s the weather in Pune this weekend?” then “and should I carry an umbrella on Sunday?” works naturally.
  • Screen awareness: ask about what is on screen, or use Circle to Search to identify anything.
  • Gemini Live: real-time spoken conversations, and you can share your camera or screen to ask about what you are seeing.
  • Cross-app tasks: “Find my hotel booking in Gmail and add the check-in time to my calendar.” On newer Pixel and Galaxy phones Gemini can even complete multi-step tasks in other apps; see my Pixel 11 AI features guide.
  • Writing and summarising: draft messages, summarise long articles or YouTube videos, and brainstorm.

Assistant Commands and Their Gemini Equivalents

What you want Say to Gemini Needs connected app?
Alarm “Set an alarm for 6:30 tomorrow” Utilities (built in)
Timer “Set a 12-minute pasta timer” Utilities
Lights “Turn off the living room lights” Google Home
Music “Play lo-fi on Spotify” Spotify or YouTube Music
Reminder “Remind me to pay rent on the 1st” Google Tasks / Calendar
Shopping list “Add milk to my shopping list” Google Keep
Message “Message Riya on WhatsApp I’m running late” WhatsApp / Messages
Navigation “Navigate home avoiding tolls” Google Maps
Phone settings “Turn on the flashlight” Utilities

What Replaces Assistant Routines?

This is the biggest gap people notice. There are two ways to rebuild them:

  • Spoken multi-step commands: Gemini can chain actions in one request, for example “Turn off the lights, set an alarm for 6 am and play rain sounds on Spotify.” For a bedtime routine you only use at night, this is often enough.
  • Scheduled and triggered automations: create them in the Google Home app > Automations. These run on a time, sunrise or sunset, or a device event, without you saying anything. Home automations work with Gemini because Gemini controls Home devices.

Things like “Good morning” briefings that read news and weather can be done by simply asking Gemini “Give me my morning briefing: weather, my first calendar event and top headlines”. It is not saved like a routine, but it works.

Kids, Teens and Family Link

Supervised accounts are not left out. Parents can manage whether a child can use Gemini in the Family Link app, and Google applies extra content protections for younger users. If a child’s phone switches and Gemini is blocked in Family Link, voice commands like timers will stop working until you allow it, so check the setting after the update.

Nest Speakers, Displays and Gemini for Home

Google Home and Nest speakers and displays are not part of the phone switch. They are moving to Gemini for Home on their own timeline. Your phone switching does not change what your speaker does, and the speaker keeps working with the same Google Home devices. If you use both, keep everything on one Google account so lights, routines and media stay in sync.

Common Problems and Fixes

“Hey Google” does not respond

Open Gemini > Settings > “Hey Google” & Voice Match, turn it off and on, and retrain. Make sure battery optimisation is not restricting the Google app (Settings > Apps > Google > Battery > Unrestricted).

Smart-home commands fail

Connect Google Home under Gemini > Settings > Apps and make sure your devices appear in the Google Home app on the same account.

Gemini does not work on the lock screen

Enable Gemini on lock screen in settings. Some actions still require unlocking for security.

Gemini is slow for simple tasks

Use short, direct commands (“timer 5 minutes”). Keep the Gemini app updated; Google has been speeding up basic actions since the switch.

Android Auto voice commands misbehave

Update Android Auto and the Gemini app, then reconnect the car. Check that Gemini has microphone and location permissions.

Privacy: What Gemini Stores

By default, Gemini Apps Activity saves your chats to your Google account, and Google says a subset may be reviewed by trained reviewers to improve the service. You can turn activity off or set auto-delete in myactivity.google.com/product/gemini. Even with activity off, Google keeps conversations for a short period to provide the service. Avoid sharing passwords, health details or confidential work data in chats.

If you want an assistant that never sends anything to the cloud, the alternative is running a local model on your own PC. My guide to the best Ollama models is a good starting point.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I switch back to Google Assistant?

No. Once your device receives the change, Assistant is removed and cannot be restored.

When will my phone switch?

The rollout started September 4, 2026 and takes several weeks across regions. If your phone already defaults to Gemini, you are effectively switched.

Is Gemini free on Android?

Yes, the standard Gemini assistant is free. Google AI Pro and Ultra subscriptions add higher limits, newer models and extras like agentic browsing in Chrome.

Does this affect Google Nest speakers?

Not directly. Smart speakers and displays move to Gemini for Home separately.

What about Samsung phones with Bixby?

Galaxy devices are included. Bixby stays as Samsung’s own assistant; Gemini replaces only Google Assistant. My Galaxy AI One UI 9 guide explains how the two work together.

Does Gemini work offline?

Mostly no. Basic phone actions such as alarms may work with a weak connection, but answers and most commands need the internet, just like Assistant did.

Will my Assistant routines move to Gemini?

Not automatically. Rebuild scheduled ones as Google Home automations and use multi-step voice commands for the rest.

What are the minimum requirements for Gemini?

Android 10 or newer and at least 2 GB of RAM. Phones below that keep the classic Assistant for now.

Can I use Gemini on my iPhone with “Hey Google”?

No. iPhone does not allow a third-party wake word. Use the Gemini app, its widget, or a Siri shortcut.

Final Thoughts

The end of Google Assistant feels abrupt, but for most people Gemini is an upgrade once it is set up properly. Connect Google Home and your music app, enable lock-screen use, retrain Voice Match, and the familiar commands work again, with much smarter answers on top. Gemini is also spreading into the browser; see my Gemini in Chrome guide for auto browse and the side panel.
