Canva Layoffs 2026: 1,271 Roles Hit in a ‘Refounding’ (Was AI to Blame?)

Canva, the design app that more than 265 million people use every month, has just announced the first mass layoff in its 13-year history. About 1,271 roles, roughly 22% of the company, are affected.

The internet reaction was split. Some people blamed AI, others praised one of the most generous severance packages a tech company has offered. Here is what actually happened, what Canva said (and did not say) about AI, and what it means for you as a Canva user, designer or job seeker.

TL;DR

  • What: On 3 November 2026 CEO Melanie Perkins told staff that 1,271 people (about 22%) will lose their jobs, change roles or be asked to relocate.
  • Why (Canva’s words): growth “has slowed for the first time in a decade”, and Canva needs to “refound” itself around small teams.
  • AI angle: the memo does not name AI as the cause. But Perkins said earlier this year that serving AI tasks cost too much, and Canva now competes with AI design tools from OpenAI, Google and Anthropic.
  • Severance: at least 6 months’ pay in every country, 12 months of healthcare where provided, vesting cliff removed, keep your MacBook, and US$10,000 grants for anyone starting something new.
  • For users: no product shutdowns or price changes have been announced. Your designs and plan are not affected today.

What Happened at Canva

On Monday 3 November 2026, Canva co-founder and CEO Melanie Perkins sent an all-staff memo titled “An important update on our team”. She also posted about it on LinkedIn.

The memo said 1,271 employees, about 22% of Canva, would be affected. Some will move into new roles, some will be asked to relocate, and others will leave the company. Canva has not said how many are pure job losses.

Perkins called it “without doubt the hardest moment in our thirteen-year history”. She added: “I’ve come to the difficult conclusion that small changes won’t be enough.”

Quick answer: Canva did not shut down, sell or change its product. It is reorganising its staff, and about 1 in 5 employees is affected in some way.

Timeline: From Boom to “Refounding”

Date Event
April 2026 Canva launches Canva AI 2.0. Perkins later says it cut cost per AI task by 90%.
May 2026 Anthropic launches Claude Design, a direct AI design rival (Canva says it helped Anthropic build it).
August 2026 Canva tells investors 2026 revenue growth will be about 20%, down from a 30% forecast. Perkins tells Fortune AI demand “significantly exceeded” expectations and rollout was slowed to cut unit costs.
October 2026 Canva Brush design agent launches, with cost per task 46% lower than the previous agent.
3 Nov 2026 Restructure memo: 1,271 roles affected.
10 Nov 2026 Company all-hands meeting (org all-hands start 11 Nov).
14 Dec 2026 Registration closes for the US$10,000 Canva Collective Fund grants.
January 2027 Most hybrid staff expected in the office about 2 to 3 days a week.

The 4 Big Changes Inside Canva

The memo lists four structural changes. They explain why so many roles were touched, even where nobody was let go.

  1. One product organisation. The Product, Growth and Platform groups merge into a single Product Org, for “clearer ownership and fewer handovers”.
  2. Fewer specialists. Narrow sub-specialities fold into broader roles, and management layers collapse.
  3. Sydney first. Sydney becomes the main home for more product teams, and some staff are asked to move to central hubs.
  4. More office time. From January, most hybrid employees should be in the office about 2 to 3 days a week.

Perkins framed all of this as a “refounding”: going back to small, empowered teams like the early Canva days. That word is now the most quoted line from the memo.

Was It Because of AI?

This is the question everyone on social media is asking. The honest answer: Canva did not say so, but AI is all over the background.

What Canva actually said

  • The memo: blames slower growth and a company that got too layered. It does not name AI as the reason, as Inc. and Yahoo Finance both point out.
  • A side line: InformationWeek quotes the memo saying “New technology is transforming what people can create”. That is as close as it gets.

The AI pressure around it

  • AI is expensive to serve. Perkins said this year that the “average cost of serving an AI task was too high”, because Canva leans on frontier model partners (Fast Company).
  • Demand outran the budget. She told Fortune in August that AI demand beat expectations, so Canva slowed the rollout to rebuild its architecture.
  • New rivals. ChatGPT and Gemini now make images, slides and documents in chat, and Anthropic’s Claude Design goes straight at Canva’s core market.

Note: Headlines saying “AI replaced 1,271 Canva workers” go further than the facts. Canva has not said any role was replaced by AI. The fair summary is “growth slowed in an AI-heavy market”.

The Severance Package Everyone Is Talking About

The part that went viral on LinkedIn was not the cut. It was the exit package, which Fast Company says is “earning praise”. Here is the full list from the memo.

Benefit Detail
Pay At least 6 months’ salary, including statutory entitlements, in every country
Shares One-year vesting cliff removed for people who joined in the last 12 months
Healthcare 12 months of cover where Canva already provides it
Wellbeing 12 months of the Canva Care employee assistance programme, family included
Career help Coaching, CV and interview prep, 1 year of LinkedIn Premium
Talent directory Opt-in alumni list shared with Canva’s investors and partners
Laptop Keep your Canva MacBook
Start-up grants US$10,000 from the Canva Collective Fund, no equity taken, register by 14 December

Perkins also shared her own email address and asked hiring managers to contact her directly. Departing staff kept Slack and Gmail access until the end of that week to say goodbye.

Canva vs Other 2026 Layoffs

Canva is part of a much bigger wave. US employers announced 153,074 job cuts in October 2026, the most for any October since 2003, per Challenger, Gray & Christmas. Of those, 31,039 were tied to AI restructuring.

Here is how Canva compares with other 2026 cuts, and whether each company itself blamed AI.

Company When Jobs Share Did the company cite AI?
Canva Nov 3 1,271 affected ~22% No, only “new technology”
Barclays Oct 22 5,000 5% Yes, more AI investment
eBay Oct 22 1,000 9% No
Netflix Oct 14 ~1,000 ~6% No
Microsoft (voluntary exit offers) Oct 26 Offered to 60,000 ~27% eligible No
Block Feb 27 4,000+ ~40% Yes, CEO cited AI
Snap Apr 15 1,000 16% Yes, AI reducing repetitive work
Intuit May 20 3,000 17% No, “nothing to do with AI”

Tip: When you see “laid off because of AI” online, check whether the company said it or a commentator did. In Canva’s case it is the commentators.

What It Means for Canva Users

If you use Canva for social posts, slides or print, here is the short version.

  • Your account and designs: nothing changes. Canva announced no product closures.
  • Prices: no price change was announced with the restructure. Canva Pro, Teams and Enterprise stay as they are today.
  • AI features: Canva AI, Magic Studio and Canva Brush are still live. The company’s push to cut AI costs suggests more in-house models, not fewer features.
  • Support speed: unknown. Any reorganisation can slow responses for a few weeks.

Tip: It is still smart to keep local copies of important work. In Canva, open a design, click Share > Download and save a PDF or PNG of anything you cannot afford to lose.

If you are thinking about alternatives

What It Means for Designers and Job Seekers

Canva’s memo is a useful signal about where design jobs are heading. Narrow specialist roles are being folded into broader ones.

  • Be a generalist with depth: brand, layout and prompt-driven production in one person is the profile companies say they want.
  • Learn the AI tools hands-on: knowing how to brief and correct an AI design agent is now a hiring skill.
  • Show cost awareness: Canva’s own problem was the cost of AI tasks. Designers who can explain cheaper workflows stand out.
  • Build in public: Canva is sharing an alumni directory with investors, which shows how much hiring now runs through networks.

If you want to run image models yourself instead of paying per task, my GPU buying guide is a good starting point.

If You Were Affected: A Checklist

  1. Read your local letter. Timing and entitlements vary across Canva’s 37 countries, so check the exact dates in your own notice.
  2. Check your shares. If you joined in the last year, confirm the vesting cliff removal is reflected in your equity account.
  3. Register for the grant. The Canva Collective Fund closes on 14 December 2026. US$10,000 with no equity is worth claiming if you have any side project.
  4. Opt in to the alumni directory. It is shared with Canva’s investors and partners.
  5. Activate LinkedIn Premium and coaching. Both last a year, so start early.
  6. Back up personal files. Move anything personal off the MacBook’s work accounts before access ends.

Warning: Severance tax rules differ by country. Speak to a local tax adviser before you decide how to take any payout.

What We Still Don’t Know

  • How many people actually lost jobs versus changed role or relocated.
  • Which countries and teams were hit hardest.
  • The IPO timeline. Fast Company says the cuts raise questions about when Canva will list, and Canva has not given a date.
  • Product roadmap changes. We will know more after the 10 November all-hands.

My Take

I think this is less “AI took the jobs” and more “AI changed the maths”. Canva grew fast by giving everyone easy design, and then AI made easy design a feature in every chatbot.

At the same time, running AI at Canva’s scale costs real money. A company in that squeeze tends to cut layers and bet on fewer, faster teams, which is exactly what this memo does.

The severance package is genuinely good and worth copying. If you use Canva, nothing changes for you today; just keep an eye on pricing and AI credit changes in 2027.

FAQ

How many people did Canva lay off?

Canva said 1,271 roles, about 22% of staff, are affected. That number includes people who change roles or relocate, so the pure layoff count is lower but has not been published.

Did Canva blame AI for the layoffs?

No. The memo blames slower growth and too many layers. AI pressure is the context that analysts point to, not Canva’s stated reason.

Is Canva shutting down or raising prices?

No. Canva announced no shutdown and no price change alongside the restructure.

What severance is Canva offering?

At least six months’ pay, 12 months of healthcare where provided, the vesting cliff removed for new joiners, career coaching, LinkedIn Premium, a free MacBook and optional US$10,000 start-up grants.

Is this Canva’s first layoff?

It is Canva’s first mass layoff in its 13-year history, according to Fast Company and Inc.

Will Canva’s AI features still work?

Yes. Canva AI, Magic Studio and the Canva Brush agent are still available, and Canva has been cutting their running costs rather than removing them.

Where is Canva moving teams?

Sydney becomes the main home for more product teams, and some staff are being asked to move to central hubs.
