The Gemini app can now create, preview and edit documents, spreadsheets, slide decks, PDFs and code files right inside the chat.

Google added file generation in April 2026, and at the end of October it added in-chat preview and editing, so you no longer have to copy text out of Gemini and fix it somewhere else.

This guide shows you exactly how to use it, which formats work where, and the prompts that give clean results.

TLDR

  • Gemini can generate 11 file types from one prompt: Google Docs, Sheets and Slides, PDF, Word (.docx), Excel (.xlsx), CSV, LaTeX, TXT, RTF and Markdown.
  • Since October 29, 2026 you can also preview and edit those files inside the chat: open them full screen, type edits, or highlight a part and ask Gemini to change it.
  • PDF preview and editing works on web and mobile. Docs, Sheets, slide decks, Markdown, TXT and code editing is web only for now.
  • It is available to all Gemini app users, including the free plan, in every language Gemini supports. Paid plans only raise your usage limits and context window.
  • You can download files to your device, and send Docs, Sheets and Slides straight to Google Drive.

What is new in Gemini file creation

This feature arrived in two steps, and it helps to know both.

Step one, April 29, 2026: file generation. Google announced that Gemini could create files from a single prompt directly in the chat. You describe the file you need, and Gemini hands you a real file instead of a wall of text.

Google said the feature was available to all Gemini app users globally from day one.

Step two, October 29, 2026: preview and edit in chat. Google then added the part many people were waiting for. You can now generate, preview and edit files without leaving the conversation.

Google’s own list covers “documents, PDFs, presentations, spreadsheets, code, and more.” You can expand a file to full screen and type changes yourself, like in a normal word processor.

You can also highlight a section and ask Gemini a question about it, or ask it to rewrite that part or change a visual.

Google’s example is a good picture of the full flow.

You upload photos of handwritten lecture notes, ask Gemini for a PDF study guide, then read it in the chat, highlight a paragraph you do not understand, ask Gemini to explain it, and fix the wording yourself.

The Verge also described highlighting a table and asking Gemini to turn it into a graph.

So if you saw headlines in early November about Gemini “creating Docs, Sheets and Slides in chat,” this is the update they meant. It is a real file workflow now, not just a chat answer you have to copy and paste.

Supported formats and where they work

Here is the full list of formats Gemini can create, based on Google’s April announcement, plus where in-chat preview and editing works based on the October announcement.

Format Can Gemini create it? In-chat preview and edit How you get it out
Google Docs Yes Web only Export to Drive or download
Google Sheets Yes Web only Export to Drive or download
Google Slides / slide decks Yes Web only Export to Drive (Slides) or download
PDF (.pdf) Yes Web and mobile Download
Microsoft Word (.docx) Yes Not listed by Google Download
Microsoft Excel (.xlsx) Yes Not listed by Google Download
CSV (.csv) Yes Not listed by Google Download
LaTeX Yes Not listed by Google Download (or render to PDF)
Plain text (.txt) Yes Web only Download
Rich Text Format (.rtf) Yes Not listed by Google Download
Markdown (.md) Yes Web only Download
Code files Yes (in chat and Canvas) Web only Download, copy, or export to Colab from Canvas

The simple rule: if you want to edit inside the chat, use gemini.google.com on a computer. If you are on your phone, PDFs are the format that fully works for preview and editing today.

Plans, availability and limits

Who gets it. Both Google posts say the features are available to all Gemini app users, in every language where the Gemini app is offered. That includes the free plan. You do not need Google AI Pro or Ultra to create a PDF or a Google Doc from a prompt.

What paid plans change. The difference between plans is how much you can do, not whether the feature exists. According to Google’s Gemini Apps limits page, the free plan has standard limits and a 32k token context window.

Google AI Plus doubles the standard limits and gives 128k tokens. Google AI Pro gives four times the standard limits and a 1 million token context window. Google AI Ultra goes higher still.

The same page says limits refresh every 5 hours until you reach a weekly cap, and Google says these limits can change without notice. If you want to compare plans in detail, see my Google AI Pro vs Ultra guide.

Why the context window matters here. When you upload a long report or a big spreadsheet and ask Gemini to turn it into slides, the source has to fit in the context window to be fully read.

Note: On the free plan, a long source may get only partly read, and the file you get back can miss sections. If your sources are large, a paid plan helps.

Limits Google has not published. Google has not listed a maximum page count, slide count, row count or file size for generated files. In practice, very long requests are more likely to come back shortened. Ask for big documents in parts (see the tips section).

Work and school accounts. If you use Gemini through a Google Workspace work or school account, your admin controls which Gemini features you can use. If you do not see the option, the admin may have it turned off.

How to create a file in Gemini (step by step)

There is no special button for file creation. You simply ask for a file and name the format. Here is the full procedure.

  1. Open gemini.google.com in your browser and sign in with your Google account. You can also use the Gemini app on Android or iPhone, but editing works best on the web.
  2. If you have source material, click the + (Add files) button below the prompt box and upload it. This can be a PDF, a photo of notes, a spreadsheet or a Doc from Drive.
  3. Type a prompt that names the file type clearly. For example: “Create a Google Sheet that tracks my monthly budget with columns for category, planned, actual and difference.”
  4. Add the details that matter: audience, length, sections, tone and any data to include. The more specific you are, the less you need to fix later.
  5. Send the prompt. Gemini replies with a file card in the chat instead of plain text.
  6. Click the file card to open the preview. Read it before you export it.
  7. If something is wrong, ask for a change in the chat (“Add a totals row”, “Make slide 3 shorter”) or edit it yourself in the preview.
  8. When you are happy, download it to your device or export it to Google Drive.

Tip: A small habit that saves time: always put the format word near the start of your prompt, such as “Create a PDF…” or “Make an Excel file…”. If you only say “make me a study guide,” Gemini may answer in plain chat text.

How to preview and edit a file in the chat

This is the part that is new from October 29. Once Gemini has made a file, you have three ways to change it.

1. Edit by hand in full screen

  1. Click the file in the chat to open the preview.
  2. Click the expand option to open it full screen.
  3. Click into the text and type your changes, just like in a word processor.
  4. Your edited version is the one you export or download.

2. Highlight and ask

  1. In the preview, select a sentence, paragraph, table or chart.
  2. Type a request about just that part, such as “Explain this in simpler words” or “Turn this table into a bar chart.”
  3. Gemini answers or updates only the part you selected, so the rest of the file stays the same.

3. Ask for a full revision

You can still type a normal follow-up in the chat, such as “Make the whole document more formal” or “Add a summary slide at the end.” Gemini rewrites the file and gives you the new version.

Use hand edits for small fixes like a name or a number. Use highlight-and-ask when one section is wrong. Use a full revision when you want to change the tone or structure of the whole file.

Export options: download, Drive, Docs, Sheets and Slides

Google’s April post says that for most formats you can download the file to your device or export it to Drive. Here is how that plays out in practice:

  • Google Docs, Sheets and Slides: export straight to your Google Drive. The file opens in the normal Docs, Sheets or Slides editor, where you can share it, comment and keep working.
  • PDF, Word, Excel, CSV, RTF, TXT, Markdown and LaTeX: download the file to your computer or phone. From there you can open it in Microsoft Office, upload it anywhere, or attach it to an email.
  • Canvas documents: if you made the content in Canvas, the Share & export menu offers Export to Docs (opens a new Google Doc), Export to Slides (opens Google Slides, and slides can also be saved as PDF), Copy contents, and Export to Colab for Python code.

Once a file is in Google Docs or Slides, you can keep using AI on it there. My Gemini in Google Slides guide covers the side panel for decks, and if your team lives in Microsoft 365 instead, see the Copilot in Word, Excel and PowerPoint guide.

Prompts that work for each file type

These prompts follow one simple pattern: format + purpose + structure + details. Copy them and change the parts in brackets.

Google Doc or Word file

Create a Google Doc titled "[Project name] Proposal". Audience: my manager.
Sections: Summary, Problem, Proposed Solution, Timeline (as a table),
Budget, Risks. Keep it under 2 pages, plain business tone.
Turn this chat into a one-page Word (.docx) file with a short intro,
5 bullet points of decisions, and an action list with owners and dates.

Google Sheet, Excel or CSV

Make an Excel (.xlsx) file for a monthly household budget.
Columns: Category, Planned, Actual, Difference.
Add 12 common categories, a Difference formula, and a totals row.
Extract every product, price and quantity from the uploaded PDF invoice
into a CSV file with the headers: product,price,quantity,line_total.

Slide deck

Create a Google Slides deck with 8 slides about [topic] for [audience].
Slide 1 title, slide 2 agenda, slides 3-7 one idea each with 3 bullets
and speaker notes, slide 8 next steps. Short bullets, no paragraphs.

PDF

Create a PDF study guide from my uploaded lecture notes.
Include a summary of each topic, key terms in a table,
5 practice questions with answers at the end.

LaTeX, Markdown and code

Write this formula sheet as a LaTeX file, then also give me a PDF version.
Create a README.md for a Python CLI tool called [name] with
Install, Usage, Options (as a table) and License sections.
Write a Python script file that renames all .jpg files in a folder
by their date taken. Add comments and a usage example at the top.

For follow-ups, keep them short and specific: “Make slide 4 two bullets only”, “Add a column for due date”, “Change the tone to friendly”, or highlight a table and say “Turn this into a chart.”

Files vs Canvas: which one to use

Gemini also has Canvas, which has been around since 2025. They overlap, so here is the difference.

Canvas is a side workspace. You open it from the prompt box (Add files, then Canvas). It is great for long drafts, web apps and code you want to run and preview.

It has extra tools like Suggest edits, Change length, Change tone, version history (Previous Version and Next Version) and a Create menu that turns a doc into a slide show, quiz, infographic, web page or Audio Overview.

File creation is better when you need a finished file in a specific format, such as an .xlsx, a .docx, a CSV or a PDF to send to someone. You just ask for the format in a normal chat.

A good workflow is to draft and polish long writing in Canvas, then ask Gemini to “export this as a PDF” or “make this a Word file” when it is ready.

Tips for better files

  • Name the format every time. “Google Sheet” and “Excel file” give different outputs. Be exact.
  • Give a structure. List the sections, columns or slides you want. Gemini follows outlines well.
  • Upload your sources. Files built from your own notes or data are more accurate than files built from a topic name.
  • Split long jobs. For a 30-slide deck or a long report, ask for the first half, review it, then ask for the rest.
  • Check numbers and formulas. AI can make mistakes. Open spreadsheets in Sheets or Excel and check that formulas calculate correctly.
  • Use highlight-and-ask for fixes. It changes only what you select, so you do not lose good parts of the file.
  • Keep private data in mind. Your chats and uploads follow your Gemini Apps Activity settings. Avoid uploading sensitive documents unless your account settings and company rules allow it.

If you work with research material a lot, NotebookLM is a good partner tool: collect and study sources there, then use Gemini to produce the final file.

Troubleshooting: Common Problems and Fixes

Gemini replied with plain text instead of a file

Put the format at the start of the prompt: “Create a PDF…” or “Generate a Google Sheet…”. If it still answers in text, reply “Please give me this as a downloadable .docx file.”

I cannot edit the file on my phone

That is expected for now. Google says only PDF preview and editing works on mobile. Docs, Sheets, slide decks, Markdown, TXT and code editing is web only. Open gemini.google.com on a computer.

The export to Drive option is missing

Drive export applies to Google Docs, Sheets and Slides. For PDF, Word, Excel and other formats, download the file and upload it to Drive yourself. On a work or school account, your admin may also block Drive export.

The file is cut short or missing sections

The request may be too long, or your source may not fit in your plan’s context window. Ask for the file in parts, or trim the source. Paid plans have a larger context window.

I hit a usage limit

Gemini limits refresh every 5 hours up to a weekly cap. Wait for the reset or upgrade your plan.

Formulas or charts look wrong in Excel

Open the file and check each formula. Ask Gemini to “list every formula used and what it does” so you can verify them, or rebuild the sheet as a Google Sheet and check it there.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Gemini file creation free?

Yes. Google says file creation and in-chat editing are available to all Gemini app users, including the free plan. Paid plans give higher usage limits and a bigger context window for long sources.

What file types can Gemini create?

Google Docs, Sheets and Slides, PDF, Word (.docx), Excel (.xlsx), CSV, LaTeX, plain text, RTF and Markdown, plus code files.

When did in-chat editing launch?

Google announced in-chat preview and editing on October 29, 2026. File generation itself launched earlier, on April 29, 2026.

Can I edit Gemini files on the mobile app?

Only PDFs for now. PDF preview and editing works on web and mobile. Other formats can be edited in chat on the web only.

Can Gemini export directly to Google Slides or Sheets?

Yes. Google Docs, Sheets and Slides files can be exported straight to Google Drive, where they open in the normal editors. Other formats are downloaded to your device.

Is there a page or file size limit?

Google has not published a fixed limit for generated files. Your source material must fit in your plan’s context window (32k tokens on free, up to 1 million on AI Pro and Ultra), and very long requests work better in parts.

Does it work with Google Workspace business accounts?

It can, but your admin decides which Gemini features are turned on. If you do not see file options on a work or school account, ask your admin.
