Google Photos has quietly become one of the most capable AI apps on your phone. You can now fix a closed eye by simply saying so, turn a holiday snap into a six-second video, search your library with questions like “what did we eat in Lisbon?”, and even get a digital wardrobe built from your photos. The problem is that features roll out by country, by phone and sometimes by subscription, so it’s hard to know what you actually have. This guide lists every AI feature in Google Photos as of November 2026, how to use each one, where it’s available and how to switch the AI off if you’d rather not.
- Help me edit: type or say what to change (“remove the sunglasses”, “brighten the sky”). Uses your Face groups for personalised fixes. Android, and iOS in the US.
- Nano Banana restyle and Create with AI templates: turn photos into paintings, storybook pages, headshots or cards (templates: US and India, 18+).
- Ask Photos: chat-style search of your library in 100+ countries and many languages, with Gemini features enabled. The Ask button lets you question a single photo (US).
- Create tab: Photo to Video (6-second clips), Remix styles, collages and highlight videos. Outputs carry an invisible SynthID watermark.
- New in 2026: Wardrobe (outfits from your photos), Moods (35mm film, 2000s digicam), more Remix templates, a redact tool in markup, and multi-photo edits through the Gemini app.
- Turn off: Photos settings > Gemini features in Photos, and Face groups for personalised edits.

Help Me Edit: Edit by Asking
- Open a photo and tap Edit.
- Tap Help me edit (the sparkle prompt box at the bottom).
- Type or tap the microphone and say what you want, for example:
- “Remove the reflections in the window”
- “Open my eyes” or “remove my sunglasses”
- “Make the sky look like sunset”
- “Remove the people in the background”
- Review the result. Ask for tweaks (“a bit less”, “keep the original colours”) or tap Undo.
- Tap Save copy to keep the original as well.
For faces, Google Photos uses other photos of the same person from your Face groups, so fixes like opening eyes look like that person rather than a generic face. That only works if Face groups is on.
Tip: one clear instruction per step works better than a long list. Do “remove the bin”, save, then “warmer light”.
Nano Banana Restyle and AI Templates
Google’s Nano Banana image model is built into Help me edit, so you can ask for creative changes as well as fixes: “turn this into a Renaissance portrait”, “make it a colourful tile mosaic”, “make it look like a children’s storybook page”.
On Android, the Create tab also has a Create with AI section with templates built on popular requests: professional headshots, holiday cards and more. These are available in the US and India for users aged 18 and over. Personalised templates that use your gallery (hobbies, places you visit) need Face groups, location estimates and your “Me” face group turned on.

Ask Photos and the Ask Button
Ask Photos replaces keyword search with a conversation. Examples that work well:
- “Show the best photos from each national park we visited.”
- “What was the name of the restaurant in Rome with the blue door?”
- “When did my daughter learn to ride a bike?”
- “Find my passport photo page” (handy at the airport).
It expanded to more than 100 countries and 17 more languages in November 2025 for eligible users with Gemini features enabled in Photos. You can still switch back to classic search from the search screen.
The Ask button (US, Android and iOS) appears while viewing a photo. Tap it to ask about what’s in the picture (“what breed is this dog?”), find related moments, or describe an edit. Android Authority spotted code in July 2026 suggesting Ask will also be able to edit photo details like date, time, location and captions, but that hadn’t launched at the time of writing.
Photo to Video, Remix and the Create Tab
Photo to Video
- Open the Create tab and choose Photo to video.
- Pick a photo.
- Choose Subtle movements or I’m feeling lucky.
- Wait for the six-second clip, then save or share it.
It launched in July 2025 powered by Veo 2. Daily usage limits apply, and videos carry a visible watermark as well as SynthID.
Remix
Remix turns a photo into anime, comic, sketch or 3D-animation styles, and Google added more Remix templates in September 2026. Find it in Create > Remix, choose a style and save the result as a new image.
Other Create tools
Collages, highlight videos, cinematic photos and animations also live here.
New in 2026: Wardrobe, Moods, Redact and Gemini Edits
- Wardrobe (announced April 2026, rolling out from summer): Photos catalogues clothing it finds in your pictures into a digital wardrobe and generates outfit ideas you can try on virtually. If you don’t want it, don’t enable it; it relies on face and photo analysis of you.
- Moods (September 2026): one-tap vintage looks such as 35mm film and 2000s digicam.
- Redact (September 2026): the markup tool can now hide private details like text on documents and screens before you share a screenshot. Use this before posting anything with an address, ticket number or card.
- Multi-photo edits in Gemini (September 2026): in the Gemini app you can edit several photos with one prompt, for example removing people from the background of a whole set. Some of these are limited to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in the US. See Google AI Plus vs Pro vs Ultra.
Classic AI Tools: Magic Eraser, Unblur and More
| Tool | What it does |
|---|---|
| Magic Eraser | Removes objects or people you circle or brush |
| Magic Editor | Move, resize or regenerate parts of a photo (now largely folded into Help me edit) |
| Photo Unblur | Sharpens blurry photos, including old scans |
| Portrait light and blur | Adds lighting and background blur after the fact |
| Sky and colour pop | One-tap sky replacements and selective colour |
| Best Take (Pixel) | Combines group shots so everyone is smiling |
Many of these used to need a Pixel or a Google One plan and are now available to all Photos users on supported phones.
Privacy, SynthID and Turning AI Off
- SynthID: images and videos created or edited with Google’s generative tools get an invisible SynthID watermark, and Photos shows an “Edited with AI tools” note in the photo details. Even iOS 27.2 can now read SynthID labels.
- Gemini features in Photos: controls Ask Photos and some AI edits. Turn off in Photos > your profile picture > Photos settings > Gemini features in Photos.
- Face groups: needed for personalised edits and Wardrobe. Turn off in Photos settings > Privacy > Face groups. Turning it off deletes face models.
- Training: Google says your personal photos aren’t used to train its generative AI models outside of Photos, Check the Ask Photos privacy notice in the app for how queries and feedback are handled, and avoid asking about sensitive documents if that worries you.
Feature Missing? Fixes
Help me edit doesn’t appear
Update Google Photos from the Play Store or App Store, check you’re signed in with a personal Google account (many features are off for Workspace and supervised accounts), and that your account is set to 18+.
Ask Photos isn’t available
Enable Gemini features in Photos settings. If the toggle isn’t there, Ask Photos hasn’t reached your country or language. Setting your Google account language to English can help in some regions.
Personalised fixes look wrong
Make sure Face groups is on and the person is labelled. Merge duplicate face groups so Photos has more reference shots.
Photo to Video says you’ve hit a limit
Daily limits apply. Try again the next day. Paid Google AI plans may have higher limits.
Edits are slow or fail
Most generative edits run in the cloud. Use Wi-Fi, keep the app open until it finishes, and try a smaller, clearer request.

Final Thoughts
The features I’d try first are Help me edit with your voice for quick fixes, Ask Photos for finding things you’d never find by scrolling, and the new redact tool before sharing any screenshot. Photo to Video and Remix are fun extras, and Wardrobe is the one to think about before enabling, since it’s built on deep analysis of photos of you.
