DaVinci Resolve 21 has more AI tools than ever: face ageing, synthetic depth of field, AI voiceovers, smart search, and now a built-in MCP server that lets Claude or Codex drive your edit.
The catch is that almost all of them need DaVinci Resolve Studio. This guide lists every AI tool in Resolve 21.1, shows which ones work in the free version, explains the GPU you need, and helps you decide whether the $295 Studio licence is worth it.
- Current version: Resolve 21.1.2 (27 October 2026). Resolve 21 launched on 3 June 2026, and 21.1 arrived on 8 September.
- Free version AI: only the basics, such as Auto Color, Shot Matching, Dialogue Leveler and gyro stabilisation.
- Studio ($295, one-time): Magic Mask, Voice Isolation, transcription, UltraNR, Speed Warp, Super Scale, the nine new Resolve 21 AI tools, and the MCP server.
- New in 21.1: connect Claude, Claude Code or ChatGPT Codex via File, then Setup AI Assistants (Studio only).
- Hardware: advanced AI tools need 16 GB of VRAM on Windows and Linux, or 16 GB of memory on Apple Silicon.
- Warning: projects opened in 21.1 no longer open in 20.3. Back up first.

AI Assistants and the MCP Server (21.1)
This is the feature that makes Resolve interesting for AI users. Resolve Studio 21.1 includes a native MCP server. MCP (Model Context Protocol) is the standard way AI assistants connect to apps and tools.
Blackmagic says Studio 21.1 can connect to Claude, Claude Code and ChatGPT Codex. Its example: ask the assistant to cut a three-minute highlight edit from a long clip in the Media Pool and render it as H.265.
- Update to Studio 21.1 or later. The MCP server is not in the free version.
- Install your assistant. For Claude Code, follow my Claude Code install guide.
- Open File, then Setup AI Assistants in Resolve and pick the assistant you want to connect.
- Choose what media AI can use. A new preference lets AI tools read full-resolution media, or camera originals and proxies with a fallback.
- Start small. Ask for safe tasks first, such as “list clips longer than 10 minutes” or “add markers where people speak”, before you let it change timelines or render.
Good uses Blackmagic lists include project analysis, organising media, changing project settings and batch rendering.
If you already use MCP elsewhere, my LM Studio MCP guide explains how MCP tools work in general. Watch your usage too, since long agent sessions can use a lot of your plan. See Claude Code pricing for the limits.
Hardware You Need for the AI Tools
| System | Minimum for Resolve 21.1 | For advanced AI tools |
|---|---|---|
| Windows | 16 GB RAM (32 GB for Fusion), 4 GB GPU memory, OpenCL 1.2 or CUDA 12.8 | 16 GB VRAM |
| macOS | macOS 15 or later on Apple Silicon, 8 GB RAM (16 GB for Fusion) | 16 GB unified memory |
| Linux | Rocky Linux 8.6, 32 GB RAM, discrete GPU with 4 GB+ VRAM | 16 GB VRAM |
| Background rendering | 32 GB RAM and 12 GB VRAM | – |
| Voice Convert | – | GPU with 8 GB VRAM |
These are minimums. On an 8 GB card most older Neural Engine tools still run, but the newest ones may refuse to start or be very slow.
Use my guide on how to check GPU VRAM usage to see what you have, and how much VRAM you need for AI if you are planning an upgrade.
How to Use the Most Popular AI Tools
Magic Mask (Studio)
- Open the Colour page and add a new node.
- Open the Magic Mask palette and pick the person or object mode.
- Draw a stroke over the subject in the viewer.
- Click Track Forward (and backward if needed).
- Grade inside or outside the mask. In 21, use Render in Place to save the matte as media and speed up playback.
Voice Isolation (Studio)
- Select the audio clip or track on the Edit or Fairlight page.
- Open the Inspector and turn on Voice Isolation.
- Set the amount. Start around the middle and raise it until the noise goes but the voice still sounds natural.
Auto subtitles (Studio)
- Right-click your timeline and choose Create Subtitles from Audio (it is also in the Timeline menu).
- Pick the language and caption style, then run it.
- Check names and technical words, then export as a burned-in caption or a subtitle file.
Speech Generator (Studio, new in 21)
- Go to Timeline, AI Tools, Speech Generator.
- Type or paste your script.
- Pick one of the four built-in voices, or a custom voice you have permission to use.
- Generate. The voiceover lands as a new audio clip you can edit like any other.
Auto Color (free)
- On the Colour page, select a clip.
- Click the A (Auto Balance) button in the Primaries panel.
- Use it as a starting point, then fine-tune by eye.
Is Resolve Studio Worth $295?
Studio is a one-time purchase of $295 in the US (about £225 ex VAT in the UK). One key can be active on two computers at once. Blackmagic has given free major upgrades for years, but it has not promised that will continue forever.
| You… | Free is enough? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Edit 1080p or 4K up to 60 fps, no AI needs | Yes | Free has no watermark and covers the full edit, colour, Fusion and Fairlight |
| Need captions for social video | No | Transcription and subtitles from audio are Studio |
| Record noisy interviews or podcasts | No | Voice Isolation and noise reduction are Studio |
| Shoot low light | No | UltraNR and temporal noise reduction are Studio |
| Want AI assistants to edit for you | No | MCP server is Studio only |
| Have 2 GPUs | No | Free uses one GPU on Windows and Linux |
Compared with a subscription editor, $295 pays for itself in under a year for most people who need captions and noise reduction.
Resolve vs Premiere Pro and CapCut for AI
| Resolve Studio 21.1 | Premiere Pro | CapCut | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pricing | $295 once | Subscription | Free tier plus paid plans |
| Generative video | No (tools work on your footage) | Firefly Generative Extend, uses credits | Built-in AI effects |
| AI runs where | Mostly on your GPU | Mix of local and Adobe cloud | Mostly cloud |
| AI assistant control | Native MCP server | No native MCP server | No |
| Best for | Colour, audio clean-up, long-form | Adobe workflows and Firefly | Fast short-form social video |
If you want generative video inside your editor, Premiere and Firefly are the route. See my Adobe Firefly pricing guide for what that costs in credits. For quick social clips, my CapCut AI features guide covers the free options.
Troubleshooting
AI tools are greyed out or show a padlock
You are on the free version. Check Help, then About DaVinci Resolve. If it does not say Studio, the tool needs a Studio licence.
“GPU memory full” when using an AI tool
Close other GPU apps, lower the timeline resolution or use proxies, and render AI effects in place (Magic Mask’s Render in Place, or Render Cache). Advanced tools need 16 GB of VRAM.
The new AI tools are missing after updating
Make sure you installed Studio 21, not the free build. Studio and free are separate downloads, and the new tools only appear in Studio.
Setup AI Assistants is not in the File menu
It arrived in Studio 21.1. Update to 21.1 or later, and confirm you are running Studio.
My project will not open in an older version
Projects created or opened in 21.1 no longer open in Resolve 20.3. Always export a project archive or back up your project library before upgrading.
My external Python script stopped working in the free version
From 21.1, external scripting, Workflow Integrations and UIManager need Studio. The built-in console still runs scripts in free. Python 2 support was also removed, so update old scripts to Python 3.
Transcription is wrong or very slow
Set the correct language before you transcribe, clean noisy audio with Voice Isolation first, and run it on a fast GPU. Long timelines take time, so transcribe clips in the Media Pool ahead of the edit.
My Take
The free version of Resolve is still the best free editor around, with no watermark. But for AI, Studio is where everything happens. The free version only gets the oldest basics.
If you make content with talking heads, Voice Isolation, transcription and UltraNR alone justify $295. The new MCP server is the most exciting addition for AI users, but treat it as a helper for organising and batch jobs for now, and keep backups.
Check your GPU before buying. With less than 16 GB of VRAM, the newest tools will be slow or unavailable, while older ones like Magic Mask still work.
