Kling AI, the video generator from Chinese short-video company Kuaishou, is one of the most used AI video tools in the world, and in autumn 2026 it took another big step with Kling 4.0: clips up to 30 seconds, up to 10 keyframes, up to 15 reference inputs and stereo sound.
It is also one of the most confusing tools to budget for, because every model, resolution and audio option burns credits at a different rate.
In this guide I explain what Kling 4.0 and Kling 3.0 can do, what each plan costs, how many credits a clip really uses, what the API costs per second, whether the free plan is worth it, and how to get better results from your prompts. I also cover free local alternatives if you have a GPU.
- Kling 4.0: announced September 28, 2026; reported fully available on kling.ai on October 15 and on the API from October 28. Up to 30-second clips, up to 10 keyframes, up to 15 references (10 images, 5 videos), stereo audio, 720p to 4K. Kling 4.0 Flash makes 3 to 20 second clips at 720p.
- Plans: Free, Standard (about $8.80/month, 660 credits), Pro (about $32.56, 3,000 credits), Premier (about $80.96, 8,000) and Ultra (about $159.99, 26,000). First-month discounts are common.
- Kling 3.0 credit cost: 6 credits per second at 720p without audio, 8 at 1080p, 9 and 12 with native audio, 30 for 4K. A 10-second 1080p clip with audio is 120 credits.
- API: Kling 4.0 lists at about $0.157 per second at 720p and $0.235 at 1080p; a 30-second 1080p clip is about $7.05.
- Free alternative: Wan 2.2, LTX-2.5 and MiniMax H3 run locally in ComfyUI on 16 GB GPUs.
What Is Kling AI?
Kling AI is a text-to-video and image-to-video generator made by Kuaishou, the Beijing company behind one of China’s biggest short-video apps.
It uses a diffusion transformer with a custom 3D VAE and full attention, which helps it handle fast motion and physics better than many rivals. You use it on the web at kling.ai, in its mobile apps, or through its API and partner platforms.
Besides plain generation it offers image-to-video with first and last frames, multi-image references (“Elements”), motion control, lip sync and video extension.
Kling Model Versions Timeline
| Version | Released | Highlights |
|---|---|---|
| Kling (first beta) | June 2024 | Public beta in the KuaiYing editing app |
| Kling 1.6 | December 2024 | Better motion and prompt following |
| Kling 2.0 | April 2025 | Big quality jump |
| Kling 2.1 | May 2025 | Standard and quality modes |
| Kling 2.5 Turbo | September 2025 | Faster and cheaper, 25 credits for 5 s 1080p at launch |
| Kling 3.0 | February 2026 | Native audio, 4K output, up to 15 s clips |
| Kling 4.0 Flash | September 28, 2026 | Early access for Ultra yearly, 3 to 20 s at 720p |
| Kling 4.0 | October 2026 | 30 s clips, 10 keyframes, 15 references, stereo audio |
Kling 4.0: What Is New
Kling announced 4.0 on September 28, 2026. At first only the Flash version was available, as early access for Ultra yearly subscribers.
Reports say the full model became available on kling.ai (and through Kling’s MCP and CLI tools) on October 15, with the API following on October 28; API platforms such as WaveSpeedAI were serving it in October.
| Feature | Kling 4.0 | Kling 4.0 Flash |
|---|---|---|
| Clip length | 3 to 30 seconds | 3 to 20 seconds |
| Resolution | 720p, 1080p, 4K (4K not yet on API) | 720p |
| Keyframes | Up to 10 | First frame only |
| References | Up to 15: 10 images, 5 videos (30 s combined), 7 subjects | Supported |
| Audio | Two-channel stereo with improved lip sync | Not listed |
| HDR | 10-bit HDR at 1080p/4K listed as coming soon | 8-bit SDR |
The 10 keyframes are the most useful change for storytelling: you can pin the look of the scene at several points in a 30-second shot, which used to need several clips stitched together. Video references also let you copy camera motion or performance from an existing clip.
Kling AI Pricing and Plans
These are the published prices as of mid-October 2026 (US dollars). First-month prices are promotional and regional prices differ.
| Plan | First month | Monthly after | Yearly | Credits per month |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Basic (free) | Free | Free | Free | Small monthly allowance |
| Standard | $6.99 | $8.80 | $79.20 | 660 |
| Pro | $25.99 | $32.56 | $293.04 | 3,000 |
| Premier | $64.99 | $80.96 | $728.64 | 8,000 |
| Ultra | $127.99 | $159.99 | $1,429.99 | 26,000 |
Paid plans remove the watermark, unlock higher resolutions and faster queues, and allow commercial use under Kling’s terms.
How Many Credits Does a Video Cost?
For Kling 3.0, credits are charged per second of output:
| Mode | 720p | 1080p |
|---|---|---|
| Without native audio | 6 / s | 8 / s |
| With native audio | 9 / s | 12 / s |
| Voice control add-on | +2 / s | +2 / s |
| Native 4K | 30 / s | |
That works out to:
| Length | 720p silent | 720p audio | 1080p silent | 1080p audio | 4K |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5 s | 30 | 45 | 40 | 60 | 150 |
| 10 s | 60 | 90 | 80 | 120 | 300 |
| 15 s | 90 | 135 | 120 | 180 | 450 |
What a plan really buys: Standard’s 660 credits make about eleven 5-second 1080p clips with audio, or about 16 silent ones. Pro’s 3,000 credits make about fifty 5-second 1080p clips with audio.
Remember that you rarely keep the first result; budget two or three tries per usable shot. Kling has not published app credit rates for 4.0 in the sources I checked, so test with a short clip first.
Kling API Pricing
Developers pay per second. List prices reported for October 2026:
| Model | 720p | 1080p | 4K |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kling 4.0, no input video | $0.157 / s | $0.235 / s | Not yet |
| Kling 4.0, with input video | $0.094 / s | $0.141 / s | Not yet |
| Kling 3.0, no audio | $0.084 / s | $0.112 / s | $0.42 / s |
| Kling 3.0, native audio | $0.126 / s | $0.168 / s | $0.42 / s |
| Kling 2.5 Turbo, no audio | $0.042 / s | $0.07 / s | – |
So a 30-second 1080p Kling 4.0 clip costs about $7.05, and a 10-second Kling 3.0 1080p clip with audio about $1.68. Kling’s own API sells units at $0.14 each with packages from $700; resellers such as fal and WaveSpeedAI offer pay-as-you-go access.
Is Kling AI Free?
Yes, there is a free Basic plan with a small monthly credit allowance for non-subscribers. Free videos have a watermark, lower priority (long queues at busy times) and limited access to the newest models and highest resolutions.
It is good for trying Kling, but not for regular production. If you need lots of free video, a local model is the better route.
How to Use Kling AI (Step by Step)
- Go to kling.ai and sign in with Google, Apple or email.
- Choose Text to Video or Image to Video.
- Pick the model (Kling 4.0, 3.0 or a cheaper Turbo model) and the mode (standard or high quality).
- Write your prompt, or upload a start frame (and optionally an end frame or extra keyframes).
- Set aspect ratio (16:9, 9:16 or 1:1), length and resolution, and switch native audio on or off.
- Check the credit cost shown before you click Generate.
- Download the result, or use Extend to continue the shot.
Prompt Tips for Better Kling Videos
- Structure the prompt: subject, action, setting, camera, lighting, style. Example: “A young woman in a yellow raincoat walks across a neon-lit Tokyo street at night, slow dolly forward, rain reflections, cinematic, shallow depth of field.”
- One main action per clip. Several actions in 5 seconds usually blur together. Use keyframes in 4.0 for multi-beat shots.
- Name the camera move (pan left, tracking shot, crane up, handheld). Kling follows camera language well.
- Use image-to-video for consistency. Generate the perfect first frame with an image model, then animate it.
- Test at 720p silent (cheapest), then re-run the winner at 1080p with audio.
- Use negative prompts for common problems: “blurry, distorted hands, extra limbs, text, watermark”.
Kling vs Veo vs Runway vs Seedance (November 2026)
| Tool | Latest model | Where you use it | Strengths | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kling | Kling 4.0 and 4.0 Flash | kling.ai, apps, API | 30 s clips, 10 keyframes, 15 references, stereo audio, 4K | Credit maths, queues on cheaper plans |
| Google Veo | Veo 3.1 (Veo 4 not announced as of early November) | Gemini app, Flow, Google AI plans, Gemini API | Realism, native audio, bundled with Google AI Pro and Ultra | Higher resolutions only on higher plans, regional limits |
| Runway | Gen-4.5 | runwayml.com, API | Editing tools, motion control, strong benchmark results | Credits go fast on long clips |
| Seedance (ByteDance) | Seedance 2.5 | CapCut, Dreamina, API | Built into CapCut editing, good value for social clips | Content rules and labels in CapCut |
| Wan, LTX, MiniMax H3 | Open models | ComfyUI on your own GPU | Free and unlimited once set up, private | Needs 12-16 GB VRAM and setup time |
OpenAI’s Sora is not on the list because OpenAI shut it down on March 24, 2026. If you edit in CapCut anyway, my CapCut AI features guide covers Seedance credits and limits.
Commercial Use, Watermarks and Labels
- Paid plans: no watermark and commercial use allowed under Kling’s terms. Keep your invoice and the generation date in case a client asks.
- Free plan: watermarked output. Check the current terms before using it in anything you sell or monetise.
- Platforms: YouTube, TikTok, Instagram and Facebook ask you to label realistic AI-generated video. Use the platform’s AI label when you upload.
- People and brands: do not generate real people, celebrities or logos without permission. That is where most takedowns and legal problems come from.
Kling Problems and Fixes
The video ignores my prompt
Cut it down to one subject, one action and one camera move. Put the most important thing first. For complex scenes, use image-to-video with a start frame or 4.0 keyframes instead of describing everything in text.
Faces or hands morph during the clip
Use a sharp, front-facing start image, add the person as a reference or Element, keep clips shorter, and add “distorted hands, extra fingers, face morphing” to the negative prompt.
Generation failed but credits were used
Failed generations are normally refunded automatically. If the credits do not come back within a few hours, contact Kling support from the app with the task ID.
Audio is out of sync
Native audio works best on short clips with one speaker. For dialogue, generate silent video and use Kling’s lip sync, or add the voice afterwards in an editor.
The 4K option is greyed out
4K needs a supported model and plan, and Kling 4.0 4K was not yet available on the API at the time of writing. Generate at 1080p and upscale, or use Kling 3.0 for native 4K.
Free Local Alternatives to Kling
If you have an NVIDIA GPU with 12 to 16 GB of VRAM, open video models now give very good results for free in ComfyUI:
- Wan 2.2: the most popular open video model, fast with 4-step LoRAs. See my Wan 2.2 on 8 to 16 GB guide and the best Wan 2.2 LoRAs.
- LTX-2.5: video with audio, quick on mid-range cards. See LTX-2.5 in ComfyUI on 16 GB.
- MiniMax H3: strong reference-to-video and extension workflows. Start with my MiniMax H3 ComfyUI guide.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the latest Kling AI model?
Kling 4.0, announced on September 28, 2026 and rolled out in October 2026, with clips up to 30 seconds. Kling 4.0 Flash is the faster 720p version.
How much does Kling AI cost?
Standard is about $8.80/month for 660 credits, Pro about $32.56 for 3,000, Premier about $80.96 for 8,000 and Ultra about $159.99 for 26,000, with cheaper first months and yearly options.
How many credits is a 10-second Kling video?
With Kling 3.0: 60 credits at 720p silent, 80 at 1080p silent, 120 at 1080p with audio and 300 in 4K.
Can I use Kling videos commercially?
Paid plans allow commercial use under Kling’s terms and remove the watermark. Free plan videos are watermarked; check the current terms before using them commercially.
Is Kling better than Veo or Runway?
Kling 4.0 leads on clip length (30 seconds), keyframes and references, and it is good value per second. Google Veo is strongest inside Google’s own apps and plans, and Runway is popular with editors for its creative tools. OpenAI shut down Sora on March 24, 2026, so it is no longer an option. The best choice depends on the shot, so compare the same prompt on each (see the comparison table above).
Why is my Kling video stuck in the queue?
Free and lower plans get lower priority at busy times. Try off-peak hours, a shorter or 720p clip, or a paid plan for faster queues.
Do Kling credits roll over?
Subscription credits are a monthly allowance, so plan to use them within the billing period. Check the expiry date shown next to your balance, as separately bought credit packs can have different validity.
Who owns Kling AI?
Kuaishou Technology, a Beijing-based company founded in 2011 that runs one of China’s largest short-video platforms.
Final Thoughts
Kling 4.0 makes Kling one of the most capable AI video tools you can buy, especially for longer shots with keyframes, references and sound. The key to using it without overspending is understanding credits: test at 720p without audio, then upscale the keepers. If you want a talking presenter instead of cinematic shots, see my HeyGen vs Synthesia comparison, and if you want to stop paying per clip, try Wan 2.2 or LTX-2.5 locally.
