ElevenLabs is still the voice AI everyone compares against. Its new Eleven v4 model (September 2026) sits at number one on the Artificial Analysis Speech Arena. But it is also one of the most expensive options: v4 lists at $80 per million characters, and many of the next-best voices cost a quarter of that. PlayHT, once the main rival, shut down its API at the end of 2025 after Meta bought it. So if you are looking for an ElevenLabs alternative in late 2026, the good news is that several competitors are now close in quality and far cheaper, and some of the best voices can even run on your own GPU for free. In this guide I rank the alternatives using the independent Speech Arena leaderboard and current list prices.
- Closest quality for much less: Alibaba’s Qwen-Audio-3.1-TTS-Plus (Elo 1301, about $19 per 1M characters) and Google’s Gemini 3.8 Flash TTS (Elo 1282, $16.50).
- Best for real-time voice agents: Cartesia Sonic 3.6 (Elo 1293) and Inworld Realtime TTS-2, both built for very low latency.
- Best value with open weights: Fish Audio Drama 3 (Elo 1272, $15 on Fish’s API), which you can also run locally.
- Cheapest good voice: Speechify Simba 3.2 at about $6.60 per 1M characters.
- Free and offline: Fish Audio Drama 3 locally in ComfyUI, Voicebox on Windows, or small open models like Kokoro.
- ElevenLabs itself: plans run from free (10,000 credits) to Starter $6, Creator $22 and Pro $99 per month.
Why Look for an ElevenLabs Alternative?
- Cost at scale. At list price, 100 million characters a month costs about $10,000 on ElevenLabs’ Multilingual model and $5,000 on Flash, according to Inworld’s July 2026 comparison. Several rivals charge a quarter of that or less.
- Credit limits. App plans give a fixed number of credits per month, and long audiobooks or YouTube channels burn through them quickly.
- Latency for agents. Phone and voice agents need first audio in under about 200 ms; some specialists are faster.
- Privacy. Some projects cannot send scripts or voice samples to a cloud API at all.
- PlayHT is gone. Meta acquired PlayHT in July 2025 and its API shut down on December 31, 2025, so anyone who used it needs a new provider.
ElevenLabs Pricing in November 2026
For reference, here is what you are comparing against. Text to Speech costs about one credit per character.
| Plan | Price per month | Credits per month |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | 10,000 |
| Starter | $6 | 30,000 |
| Creator | $22 | 121,000 |
| Pro | $99 | 600,000 |
| Scale | $299 | 1,800,000 |
| Business | $990 | 6,000,000 |
On the API, Eleven v4 lists at $0.08 per 1,000 characters and Eleven v4 Turbo (streaming, about 100 ms latency, built for agents) at $0.04, the same as Flash/Turbo v2.5. Launch discounts ended on October 12, 2026. ElevenLabs Agents include call minutes on every plan, with extra minutes at $0.08.
Quality and Price Ranking (Speech Arena)
The Artificial Analysis Speech Arena ranks text-to-speech models by blind listener votes, which makes it the most neutral quality measure available. Here are the top models as of early November 2026, with the price to generate one million characters on each creator’s own API:
| Rank | Model | Elo | Price / 1M chars | Released |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Eleven v4 | 1334 | $80.00 | Sep 2026 |
| 2 | Eleven v4 Turbo | 1331 | $40.00 | Sep 2026 |
| 3 | Qwen-Audio-3.1-TTS-Plus | 1301 | $19.30 | Sep 2026 |
| 4 | Cartesia Sonic 3.6 | 1293 | $49.00 | Aug 2026 |
| 5 | Gemini 3.8 Flash TTS | 1282 | $16.50 | Sep 2026 |
| 6 | Fish Audio Drama 3 | 1272 | $15.00 | Oct 2026 |
| 9 | Inworld Realtime TTS-2 | 1266 | $20.80 | Aug 2026 |
| 10 | Gemini 3.8 Flash-Lite TTS | 1254 | $11.00 | Sep 2026 |
| 11 | Speechify Simba 3.2 | 1247 | $6.60 | Jul 2026 |
| 15 | Mistral Voxtral 3 TTS | 1218 | $13.00 | Oct 2026 |
A difference of 30 to 50 Elo points is noticeable in side-by-side tests but small in normal listening, so for most projects the rivals in the 1250 to 1300 range are perfectly usable at a fraction of the price.
The Best ElevenLabs Alternatives
1. Qwen-Audio TTS (Alibaba)
Qwen-Audio-3.1-TTS-Plus is the highest-ranked non-ElevenLabs model on the arena at 1301 Elo, for about $19.30 per million characters, roughly a quarter of Eleven v4’s list price. It is available through Alibaba Cloud’s Model Studio API. Best for: high-quality narration on a budget, especially multilingual and Chinese content.
2. Cartesia Sonic 3.6
Cartesia builds voice models for real-time agents, with time-to-first-audio under 90 ms on its Sonic line. Sonic 3.6 ranks fourth at 1293 Elo. It is not the cheapest ($49 per million characters on the arena’s price basis) but it is one of the best for live conversation. Best for: phone bots, voice assistants and games.
3. Google Gemini 3.8 Flash TTS
Google’s Gemini 3.8 Flash TTS scores 1282 Elo at $16.50, and the Flash-Lite version 1254 Elo at $11. It supports multi-speaker dialogue and style control through prompts, and runs through the Gemini API and Vertex AI. Best for: developers already on Google Cloud, podcasts with two voices.
4. Fish Audio Drama 3
Fish Audio’s Drama 3 (October 2026) reaches 1272 Elo at $15 per million characters on Fish’s API, and its voice cloning works from about 10 seconds of audio. The big advantage: the model weights are available, so you can run it on your own PC. I wrote a full guide on running Fish Audio Drama 3 locally in ComfyUI on an 8 GB GPU. Best for: expressive character voices, audio dramas, and anyone who wants the option to go offline.
5. Inworld Realtime TTS-2
Inworld targets interactive characters and agents. TTS-2 costs $25 per million characters on demand, down to $12.50 on its Growth plan, with under 100 ms P99 time to first byte claimed (and a faster Flash variant). It ranks ninth at 1266 Elo. Best for: NPC dialogue, companion apps and high-volume agents.
6. Speechify Simba 3.2
At about $6.60 per million characters and 1247 Elo, Simba 3.2 is the best value in the top tier. Best for: audiobooks and long-form narration where volume matters more than the last bit of realism.
7. Mistral Voxtral 3 TTS
Mistral’s Voxtral 3 TTS (October 2026, 1218 Elo, $13) is a European option. Earlier Voxtral TTS weights were released for non-commercial use, with a paid API for commercial work. Best for: teams that prefer an EU provider.
Also worth knowing
- OpenAI gpt-4o-mini-tts: about $19 per million characters (derived), easy if you already use the OpenAI API.
- Deepgram Aura-2: $30 per million characters pay-as-you-go, paired with Deepgram’s strong speech-to-text for full voice agents.
- Hume Octave: focused on emotional expression.
- Murf AI: a studio app for voiceovers with a timeline, from $19 per month, good for non-developers.
Free Local Alternatives
If you have an NVIDIA GPU, you can generate unlimited speech with no per-character cost and nothing leaving your machine:
- Fish Audio Drama 3 (local): the strongest open model on the arena right now. My ComfyUI guide shows how to run it on 8 GB of VRAM.
- Voicebox: a simple Windows app for local voice generation and cloning. See my Voicebox tutorial.
- Kokoro: a tiny open model that runs fast even on CPU, good for reading text aloud.
- Voxtral TTS open weights: non-commercial use only.
Local models need more setup and you are responsible for checking each model’s licence before commercial use.
Best Alternative by Use Case
| Use case | Pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube voiceovers | Qwen-Audio TTS or Gemini 3.8 Flash TTS | Near-ElevenLabs quality at about a quarter of the price |
| Audiobooks | Speechify Simba 3.2 | Lowest cost per character in the top tier |
| Voice agents and phone bots | Cartesia Sonic 3.6 or Inworld TTS-2 | Very low latency |
| Character voices and dramas | Fish Audio Drama 3 | Expressive, clones from 10 seconds, runs locally |
| Private or offline | Fish Audio Drama 3 local, Voicebox, Kokoro | No cloud, no per-character fees |
| Non-technical users | Murf AI or ElevenLabs Starter | Simple studio apps |
What Your Monthly Volume Actually Costs
About 1,000 characters is one minute of speech, so 1 million characters is roughly 16 to 17 hours of audio. Here is the list-price cost at three common volumes:
| Model | 1M chars (about 17 hours) | 10M chars (a busy YouTube channel) | 100M chars (an app at scale) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Eleven v4 | $80 | $800 | $8,000 |
| Eleven v4 Turbo | $40 | $400 | $4,000 |
| Cartesia Sonic 3.6 | $49 | $490 | $4,900 |
| Inworld TTS-2 (on demand) | $20.80 to $25 | $208 to $250 | $1,250 to $2,500 (Growth plan lower) |
| Qwen-Audio-3.1-TTS-Plus | $19.30 | $193 | $1,930 |
| Gemini 3.8 Flash TTS | $16.50 | $165 | $1,650 |
| Fish Audio Drama 3 (API) | $15 | $150 | $1,500 |
| Speechify Simba 3.2 | $6.60 | $66 | $660 |
| Fish Audio Drama 3 (local) | Electricity only | Electricity only | Electricity only |
Prices are the per-character list prices above; volume discounts and plan pricing can lower them. Note that Google has announced that Gemini 3.8 Flash TTS prices double on January 1, 2027, so the Gemini row becomes about $33 per million characters from then (see my Gemini API pricing guide).
How to Switch From ElevenLabs Without Losing Quality
- Pick three candidates from the table that fit your use case, for example Qwen-Audio, Gemini Flash TTS and Fish Audio Drama 3 for narration.
- Use the same 300-word script on every service, with names, numbers, a question and an emotional line. That is where voices differ most.
- Listen blind. Rename the files A, B, C and ask a friend to rank them, so the brand name does not bias you.
- Re-create your voice on the winner. If you used a cloned voice on ElevenLabs, re-clone it from your original clean recording (with your own consent) rather than from ElevenLabs output.
- Check the licence for commercial use, especially for open models run locally.
- Keep ElevenLabs Starter for a month as a fallback while you move over, then cancel.
Common TTS Problems and Fixes
- Names or brand words mispronounced: spell them phonetically in the script (“Kwen” for Qwen), or use the service’s pronunciation dictionary or phoneme tags where available.
- Flat, robotic delivery: add punctuation and short sentences, and use style prompts (“warm, excited, slower pace”) on models that support them, such as Gemini TTS and Fish Audio.
- Voice drifts over long text: generate in chunks of one or two paragraphs and keep the same seed or voice settings for every chunk.
- Clicks or clipping between chunks: export WAV rather than MP3, add 100-200 ms of silence between chunks, and normalise loudness at the end.
- Clone sounds muffled: the sample matters most. Use 10-60 seconds of clean speech, no music, no echo, recorded close to the mic.
Voice Cloning: Rules and Safety
Most of these services can clone a voice from a short sample. Only clone your own voice or a voice you have written permission to use. Cloning a real person without consent can break the service’s terms and, in many places, the law (several US states and the EU have rules on deepfake voices). For ads and commercial work, keep a record of consent, and disclose AI voices where your platform requires it.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best alternative to ElevenLabs?
For quality close to ElevenLabs at a much lower price, Qwen-Audio-3.1-TTS-Plus and Gemini 3.8 Flash TTS are the top picks on the November 2026 Speech Arena. For real-time agents, Cartesia Sonic 3.6. For free local use, Fish Audio Drama 3.
Is there a free ElevenLabs alternative?
Yes. Fish Audio Drama 3, Kokoro and Voicebox run locally for free. ElevenLabs itself also has a free plan with 10,000 credits a month.
Is ElevenLabs still the best?
On blind listening tests, yes: Eleven v4 (1334 Elo) and v4 Turbo (1331) hold the top two spots. The gap to the next models is about 30 to 60 Elo, while the price gap is often four times or more.
What happened to PlayHT?
Meta acquired PlayHT in July 2025 and the PlayHT API shut down on December 31, 2025.
How much does ElevenLabs cost per minute of audio?
Roughly 1,000 characters is about one minute of speech. At the v4 API list price of $0.08 per 1,000 characters, that is about $0.08 per minute; v4 Turbo and Flash are about half that.
Final Thoughts
ElevenLabs is still the quality leader, but in late 2026 you no longer have to pay its prices to get excellent voices. Qwen-Audio TTS and Gemini 3.8 Flash TTS give you most of the quality for about a quarter of the cost, Cartesia and Inworld win on latency, Speechify wins on price, and Fish Audio Drama 3 lets you go fully local. Try two or three with the same script before you commit; listener taste varies by voice and language. If you also need music for your videos, read my best AI music generator comparison.
