Grok’s pricing is split in two, and that confuses a lot of people. If you want to chat with Grok, you pay xAI through a SuperGrok subscription (or get Grok through an X Premium plan). If you want to build with Grok, you pay per token on the xAI API, which is a completely separate bill. A SuperGrok subscription does not include API credits, and API credits do not unlock SuperGrok features.
In this guide I cover both. The API numbers come straight from xAI’s official developer pricing page (checked November 5, 2026). xAI’s consumer plan prices vary by region and are not always shown in full, so those come from an independent pricing review that verified them against x.ai and grok.com in October 2026. Confirm at checkout.
- Grok app plans: Free $0, SuperGrok Lite $10, SuperGrok $30, SuperGrok Plus $100, SuperGrok Heavy $300 per month. X Premium+ ($40) also includes Grok.
- Grok 4.7 API: $2 input, $0.50 cached, $6 output per million tokens, 500K context.
- Cheaper API models: Grok 4.3 and Grok 4.20 at $1.25 / $2.50 with a 1M context; Grok Build 0.1 at $1 / $2 for coding.
- Long prompts cost double: once a prompt reaches 200K tokens, every token in that request is billed at 2x.
- Batch API: 20% off. Web search and code execution: $5 per 1,000 calls.
Grok Subscription Plans (SuperGrok and X)
| Plan | Monthly | Yearly | What you get |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grok Free | $0 | n/a | Chat with limits, image generation, voice, limited web and X search |
| SuperGrok Lite | $10 | $100 | Longer chats, higher limits, entry-level access |
| SuperGrok | $30 | $300 | Flagship models, Grok Imagine image and video, connectors |
| SuperGrok Plus | $100 | $1,000 | Much larger usage pool, priority access, 1080p video |
| SuperGrok Heavy | $300 | $3,000 | Maximum limits, multi-agent features, includes X Premium+ |
| X Premium+ | $40 | n/a | SuperGrok-level Grok access inside X, plus X Premium+ features |
Prices are US prices verified on October 3, 2026 by Krater’s review. The Lite and Heavy tiers are not shown on xAI’s page in every region, so check what your country offers. Grok access inside the X app is its own consumer product and does not come with any API credits.
Which Grok Plan Is Worth It?
- Free is fine for trying Grok and for quick questions, especially if you want answers that draw on X posts.
- SuperGrok Lite ($10) is the budget option if the free limits annoy you.
- SuperGrok ($30) is the main plan. It is the one to compare with ChatGPT Plus, Claude Pro and Google AI Pro at around $20, and it is $10 more expensive than all three, but it includes Grok Imagine image and video generation and connectors.
- X Premium+ ($40) makes sense if you already pay for X and want Grok bundled in.
- SuperGrok Plus and Heavy are for people who make a lot of video or need multi-agent work every day.

xAI API Prices for Every Grok Model
These are from xAI’s official developer pricing page, per million tokens:
| Model | Context | Input | Cached input | Output |
|---|---|---|---|---|
grok-4.7 (flagship) |
500K | $2.00 | $0.50 | $6.00 |
grok-4.6 |
500K | $2.00 | $0.50 | $6.00 |
grok-4.5 |
500K | $2.00 | $0.30 | $6.00 |
grok-4.3 |
1M | $1.25 | $0.20 | $2.50 |
grok-4.20-0309-reasoning / non-reasoning |
1M | $1.25 | $0.20 | $2.50 |
grok-4.20-multi-agent-0309 |
1M | $1.25 | $0.20 | $2.50 |
grok-build-0.1 (coding) |
256K | $1.00 | $0.20 | $2.00 |
xAI describes Grok 4.7 as “our flagship model for code and everything else”, with configurable reasoning. Its output price of $6 is notably low for a flagship: Claude Opus 5.5 charges $20 and GPT-6 Astra $50 per million output tokens. On the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index snapshot from October 17, 2026, Grok 4.7 at xhigh effort scores 46, against 58 for Claude Opus 5.5 and 53 for GPT-6 Astra and Gemini 4 Argon, so you are trading some capability for price.
Older models still listed by BenchLM’s price tracker include Grok 4.1 Fast ($0.20 / $0.50, 2M context), Grok Code Fast 1 ($0.20 / $1.50) and Grok 3 Mini ($0.30 / $0.50). They are marked as previous generation, so check availability before building on them.
Regional endpoint: the US regional endpoint bills tokens at 1.1x the global rate, currently for grok-4.7 and grok-4.6 only.
Batch API: 20% off all token types for grok-4.7, 4.6, 4.5, 4.3 and the 4.20 variants. That is a smaller discount than the 50% offered by OpenAI, Anthropic and Google.
Long-Context Pricing (200K and Above)
This is the rule most likely to surprise you. On every Grok model in the table, once a request’s prompt reaches 200,000 tokens, all tokens in that request are billed at double the normal rate:
| Model | Input (200K+) | Cached (200K+) | Output (200K+) |
|---|---|---|---|
| grok-4.7, grok-4.6 | $4.00 | $1.00 | $12.00 |
| grok-4.5 | $4.00 | $0.60 | $12.00 |
| grok-4.3, grok-4.20 | $2.50 | $0.40 | $5.00 |
| grok-build-0.1 | $2.00 | $0.40 | $4.00 |
So a 250K-token prompt on Grok 4.7 costs $1.00 in input alone, not $0.50. If you are feeding whole codebases or long documents, either keep prompts under 200K or compare with Claude, whose 1M context is billed at standard rates on Opus 5.5 and Sonnet 5.5 (see my Claude API pricing guide).
Tool Prices: Web Search, X Search, Code Execution
| Tool | Tool name | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Web search | web_search |
$5 per 1,000 calls |
| X search | x_search |
$5 per 1,000 posts, $10 per 1,000 profiles |
| Code execution | code_execution / code_interpreter |
$5 per 1,000 calls |
| Collections search | collections_search / file_search |
$2.50 per 1,000 calls |
| File attachments | attachment_search |
$5 per 1,000 calls |
| Image and X video understanding, remote MCP tools | Token usage only |
Web search at $5 per 1,000 calls is half of what OpenAI and Anthropic charge ($10 per 1,000). X search is unique to Grok and is its main selling point for social media monitoring, trend research and news apps.
Grok Imagine and Voice API Prices
- Grok Imagine Image 2.0: from $0.02 per image (1K and 2K).
- Grok Imagine Video 1.5: from $0.02 per second (480p, 720p and 1080p).
- Voice API: speech-to-speech $0.08 per minute, text-to-speech $15 per million characters, speech-to-text $0.10 per hour (batch) or $0.20 per hour (streaming).
These are “starting at” prices from xAI’s models page; higher resolutions and longer clips cost more.
Cost Examples
Using the same support bot workload as my other pricing guides (90M input and 12M output tokens a month, prompts well under 200K):
| Model | Input | Output | Monthly total | With Batch (-20%) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| grok-4.7 | $180 | $72 | $252 | $201.60 |
| grok-4.3 | $112.50 | $30 | $142.50 | $114 |
| grok-build-0.1 | $90 | $24 | $114 | No batch discount listed |
For comparison, the same workload costs $300 on Claude Sonnet 5.5 or GPT-6.1 Sol and $112.50 on Gemini 3.8 Flash. My full AI API pricing comparison puts every provider in one table.
SuperGrok vs ChatGPT Plus vs Claude Pro vs Google AI Pro
| SuperGrok | ChatGPT Plus | Claude Pro | Google AI Pro | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Price | $30 ($300/year) | $20 (monthly only) | $20 ($200/year) | $19.99 |
| Top model | Grok 4.7 | GPT-6 Astra | Opus 5.5 | Gemini 4 Argon |
| Image and video generation | Both (Grok Imagine) | Images | No native generator | Images and video |
| Live social data | Yes, X posts | No | No | No |
| Coding agent | Grok Build (API) | Codex | Claude Code | Gemini CLI, Jules |
| Independent intelligence score (Oct 17 snapshot) | 46 | 53 | 58 | 53 |
SuperGrok is the right pick if you want image and video generation in the same app as live X data. If you mostly need reasoning, coding or writing, the $20 plans from OpenAI, Anthropic or Google give you a stronger model for less. See ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini vs Grok for the full comparison.
SuperGrok vs X Premium: Which Should You Buy?
- You only want Grok: buy SuperGrok on grok.com or in the Grok app. It is the cheaper way to get the flagship models and Grok Imagine.
- You already pay for X Premium+ ($40): you already have SuperGrok-level Grok inside X, so a separate SuperGrok subscription is usually wasted money.
- You want both X perks and maximum Grok: SuperGrok Heavy ($300) includes X Premium+.
The two subscriptions are billed separately, so check that you are not paying for Grok twice.
How to Subscribe to or Cancel SuperGrok
- Go to grok.com (or open the Grok app) and sign in with your X, Google or email account.
- Open your profile menu, then Upgrade or Subscription, and pick Lite, SuperGrok, Plus or Heavy, monthly or yearly.
- To cancel, open the same Subscription page and choose Cancel. If you paid through the App Store or Google Play, cancel in that store instead. If you get Grok through X Premium, cancel in X under Premium.
Yearly billing is about 17% cheaper (ten months for the price of twelve) but locks you in, and Grok’s lineup changes fast. Try a month first.
How to Start With the xAI API
- Sign in at console.x.ai, add a payment method and buy prepaid credits.
- Create an API key and store it as
XAI_API_KEY. - Call it with any OpenAI-compatible SDK by changing the base URL:
from openai import OpenAI
import os
client = OpenAI(api_key=os.environ["XAI_API_KEY"], base_url="https://api.x.ai/v1")
r = client.chat.completions.create(
model="grok-4.3", # cheaper 1M-context model; use grok-4.7 for the flagship
messages=[{"role": "user", "content": "Summarise today's top AI news in 3 bullets."}],
)
print(r.choices[0].message.content)
print(r.usage)
Set a spending limit in the console before you run agents, because web search, X search and code execution are billed per call on top of tokens.
Common Grok API and Billing Problems
- 401 or 403: invalid key, or the key belongs to a team with no credits. Create a new key or top up.
- 429 Too Many Requests: you are over your rate limit. Back off and retry, or ask xAI for higher limits in the console.
- Bill doubled on long prompts: prompts of 200K tokens or more are charged at 2x for the whole request. Trim or split them.
- Surprise tool charges: agentic search can make many search calls per question, each at $5 per 1,000. Cap the number of tool calls.
- SuperGrok features missing after paying: make sure you are signed in to the same account you paid with on grok.com, and that you did not buy X Premium (which unlocks Grok inside X, not always on grok.com) instead.

Final Thoughts
For chatting, SuperGrok at $30 is a bit pricier than its rivals but bundles strong image and video generation and real-time X search. For building, Grok 4.7’s $6 output price makes it one of the cheapest flagship-class APIs, as long as you keep prompts under 200K tokens and remember that the batch discount is only 20%.
